The Austrian Hockey League 2017/2018

The Austrian Hockey League has grown to become the highest level ice hockey league in Austria. With a great tradition and roots dating back to the 1920’s, the league took a brief hiatus during World War 2 and has remained with the same structure since the mid 1960’s. Since the early 2000’s, the league has expanded slightly from having only Austrian teams to including 18 Nationalities with some from  Slovenia, Italy Hungary Czech Republic and Croatia.

Formally called the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga or EBEL, the Austrian Hockey League is currently composed of 12 teams with vintage teams such as EC KAC and newer teams like Italy’s HC Bolzano. Average attendance for league games is 2708 fans. EC KAC is the most successful team with 30 championships over their 94 year run, however Red Bull Salzburg has been the strongest team in the last decade with 7 championships.
