Rugby sevens at the 2018 Commonwealth Games Odds

The 2018 Commonwealth Games is scheduled to take place on the Gold Coast, Australia between Wednesday 4th April and Sunday 15th April.

There will be many events taking place throughout the games but one of the most dynamic and explosive sports is the Rugby Sevens.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games Rugby Sevens tournament will be played towards the end of the event between the 13th and 15th April at the Robina Stadium. This is the sixth time the men’s Rugby Sevens has been included in the Commonwealth Games and there will be a total of 16 teams participating.

The defending champions from the previous edition of the men’s rugby sevens in Glasgow four years ago is South Africa and they come into this tournament as the bookmakers’ favourites to win the gold medal.

South Africa will compete in Group C along with Scotland, Papua New Guinea and Malaysia. They should have little trouble coming out of that group on top but with only the top team from each of the four groups progressing to the semi-final, there is no margin for error.

The cut throat nature of the tournament should make for some very exciting rugby and the hosts, Australia, were drawn with England, Samoa and Jamaica in Group B.

This is a tough draw for the hosts, as they face an England team who will also have eyes on the semi-final and the meeting between these two nations, which will take place on the 14th April and be the final match on the pool, is sure to make for some dramatic action. Samoa are very much a dark horse in this group and while Australia and England are looking at each other, the Samoans could take both by surprise to claim top spot and make an intriguing outside bet to do so.

New Zealand are the most successful team in the history of rugby sevens at the Commonwealth Games. They have won the gold medal four times and the silver medal once in their five appearances and they will be aiming to make amends for losing the final to South Africa in Glasgow four years ago.

The All Blacks will be pleased with their draw and they face Canada, Kenya and Zambia in their group. The Canadians will provide the toughest test for New Zealand but it would be a major shock if they do not reach the knockout stages of the tournament.

The final group, which is Pool D, contains Fiji, Wales, Uganda and Sri Lanka. Fiji, who have won two silver medals and one bronze are the strong favourites to win the group, with the Welsh expected to be their closest rivals for first place. They have enjoyed some close matches in the past but expect to see Fiji come out on top in that one.

While the men’s event should be very competitive, especially at the semi-final stage, the women’s rugby sevens tournament looks clearer with the hosts, Australia, expected to meet New Zealand in the final.
