ESL One Hamburg 2017 Preview

The first ever Major of the Dota 2 new season is about to begin in a month. ESL will be making a historic Dota 2 event at Hamburg this October. The three days tournament will take place from October 26-29 at Barclaycard Arena featuring a prize pool of one million dollars. Along with the prize pool, a total of 1500 qualification points will be distributed among the top four teams participating in the tournament.

A new season begins, and the first Major of the new Dota 2 Pro Circuit already has its eight teams participating. Of course, we are talking about the ESL ONE Hamburg 2017.

This past weekend, the regional qualifiers came to an end, looking for a representative of each region, six in total, who would join the two teams directly invited by the organization.

The Invited teams

As the first major of the new season, it is no surprise to the two invited guests who have been revealed by ESL One.

The TI 7 champions-Team Liquid and their opponents in the Final Newbee. It is no surprise that both teams, after an impressive performance in Seattle will participate with their full TI7 team. With a little more luck, we will have the opportunity to see a rematch between them at the first major of the Dota 2 Pro Circuit.

Team Liquid – Ti7 Champions

The captain of the side Kuroky is known for his quiet behavior and stepped off the TI7 scene with tears as he managed to take his team forward, reaching the finish line and winning convincingly 3-0 against the opponents Newbee. Will the upcoming mega-tournament be the second to occasion to make the fearless captain lift the trophy?

The good news is that team Liquid will play in front of the supporting German audience, which will surely make the tournament unforgettable for TI7 champions.

Newbee – Ti7 Runner-ups

After their incredible performance at The International, they won the hearts of many Western fans, even though they eliminated Evil Geniuses, one of the favorites to win the tournament. Faith has failed twice to win the TI after reaching the Grand Final as many times in his career. Now after a period of one year with the team, he has the chance to win the first major of the pro season. Redemption will also be in the mind of the player as the side failed to qualify for the ESL One Genting held in January.

Now let’s have a look at the six qualified teams.

The qualified teams at a glance:

Following the new rules of Valve, each region carried out regional open and closed qualifiers, from which the six teams that were presented below were finally complete the participant's list.

Keen Gaming

Keen Gaming (formerly EHOME.Keen) won the Chinese qualification for ESL One Hamburg. In the final of the qualifying stage, the team beat LGD with a score of 3-2. Keen Gaming went through open qualifiers in China. In the course of regional qualification, the team went for The Dream finish, and also was better than the two teams of Invictus Gaming. Keen Gaming will take part in the first major of the season. For all members of the side, this will be the first tournament from Valve.

Happy Feet

Southeast Asia (SEA) Happy Feet- Another surprise. Although the Happy Feet roster is made up of veterans of the SEA scene, no one expected them to qualify for the ESL Major. On their way to ESL, they won against WG.Unity with a 2-1, then defeated Fire Dragon by 2-0. In the regional final, they achieved an astonishing result of 3-0 on Clutch Gamers. Needless to say, the favorites of the region, TnC Pro Team, Fnatic, Philippines Execration and Malaysia’s Mineski should wait for the next opportunity to add Qualifying Points.

Virtus Pro

There was no surprise here, VP has long been the strongest CIS representatives. They have proven themselves in several LANs where they participated during last season, among them the TI7 where they finished in 5th - 6th place. They eliminated Russia Effect (2-0), Natus Vincere (2-1), and in the final against Russia Team Spirit they won 3-0.

Team Secret

There were two quality candidates to this quota, one being Team Secret, and the other the King of Majors, OG. The latter had their debut and farewell at the hands of a surprising new team, Russia SFTe-sports, who would also reach the final, losing to Secret 3-0. Puppey's team previously managed to defeat the Russians, EPG (2-0) and Romanian side, MidOrFeed (2-0).

Evil Geniuses

The strongest team in the region had no problem in the qualifiers of the LAN event. Along the way they faced rivals like Immortals, defeating them 2-0, then against compLexity, they showed no signs of weaknesses, winning 2-0. In the end of the bracket, they faced VGJ.Storm, who were comprehensively beaten 3-0.

SG e-sports

The qualifiers were held in a single-elimination system. On their way to the final, SG e-sports was stronger than Team Unknown, STARS e-Sports and Infamous Young. Team Taka- came out of the open qualifiers and before the fight against SG, they beat Midas Club Young, Infamous, and Mad Kings.

So, these are the top 8 that will compete in Hamburg for the Qualifying Point and the million-dollar Prize Pool.

Qualifying Points & Prize Pool Distribution

The tournament will deliver 1500 Qualifying Points for the TI8 and will distribute $ 1,000,000 USD in prizes. Watch out for the event, which will take place between 26 and 29 October at the Barclaycard Arena in Hamburg, Germany!

The winner of the tournament will receive 500 thousand dollars and 750 points.

Format

The ESL One Hamburg 2017 format has not yet been announced officially. However, by looking at the format of the ESL One Genting, the eight teams will be distributed in the group of two. The top two teams from each group will advance to the playoffs of the main event. But, as this is the first major tournament of the Dota 2 season, Valve might make changes to the format of the tournament.
