Slovenia in Eurovision Song Contest Odds
Omar Naber won Slovenia’s national selection show, titled Evrovizijska Melodija 2017, with his song “On My Way”. He competed against 15 other contestants and came out on top. He’ll be jetting off to Kyiv, Ukraine to represent the country at Eurovision 2017. After two semi-finals and one national final, the Slovenian selection EMA had revealed its winner.
The song ‘On My Way’ was chosen as the winning entry by a 50/50 combination of televoting and six-member jury voting. Surprisingly, Omar Naber did not win the televoting – he finished second here to BQL. However his margin from the jury vote was big enough to carry his victory. Omar Naber won the jury vote with 64 points, and came second in the Televote with 60 points; winning with a total of 124 points; beating the Televote winner, BQL, who came second with 114 points for their song “Heart of Gold”.
The song is a peaceful ballad with a very good vocal quality. It is not as common to have male ballads and this one was very well done. Omar sticked to his semi-final staging. He started singing with black and white screen which turned colorful only when the chorus starts. Omar was alone on stage and demonstrated good vocals while delivering his ballad “On My Way” the author of which is Omar himself. After the performace, Omar got a good amount of applause from the audience.
This isn’t the first time Omar Naber has represented Slovenia at the Eurovision Song Contest. He previously sang “Stop” in 2005. Funnily enough, it’s the second time he will be jetting off to Kyiv since in 2005 the contest was also held in the Ukrainian capital. He'll try to reach the Grand Final for the first time though, as twelve years ago he finished in 12th place in the Semi-Final.
Omar Naber started his music career when he was 18 years old. He has released three solo albums over the years and has given over 900 performances in 27 countries. Omar is a regular fixture on radio playlists and regularly participates in charity concerts and events. He is currently working on a new solo album, which will have the same title as his song for Eurovision 2017, ”On My Way”.
Yet, Slovenia has never won the contest and has struggled to get good rankings. For instance, the country managed to be in the top 10 three times since their debut. The most recent one was in 2001 with the song Energy performed by Nusa Derenda. Last year, Slovenia selected ManuElla and her song Blue And Red to represent it in Stockholm. She performed in the Second Semi-Final and did not qualify for the Final. She placed 14th with 57 points.
Slovenia is taking part in the first semi final this year, and it was drawn to perform in the second half.
