The IFA Premiership – formerly the Irish Premier League, and before that the Irish Football League – and still known in popular parlance simply as the Irish League, is the national football league in Northern Ireland, and was historically the league for the whole of Ireland. Clubs in the league are semi-professional. It should not be confused with the League of Ireland (which is currently sponsored by Airtricity and therefore officially known as the Airtricity League), which is the football league for the Republic of Ireland.
For three seasons from 2009/10 the League will be sponsored by Carling and marketed as the Carling Premiership. It is run by the Irish Football Association (IFA). At the end of the season, the champion club is presented with the Gibson Cup.
The IFA Premiership 2011/2012 will conclude in May 2012.
