Next club for Cristiano Ronaldo

Every summer transfer window there is noise — loud or just a whimper but there is — about Cristiano Ronaldo making a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu and landing at another club. However, every summer has ended the same way: Ronaldo staying at Real Madrid.

Will this summer be any different?

Ronaldo’s transfer to Real Madrid from Manchester United in the summer of 2009 made him the most expensive footballer in history. It was likely that his next move would come at an even heftier price if he didn’t retire at the Bernabeu or chose to move at the twilight of his playing career. Ronaldo is still away from the end of his playing days and therefore will command a fee beyond the reach of many clubs.

One of the clubs capable of affording the Portugal national team captain are Paris Saint-Germain and them prizing the forward from Real Madrid will certainly lend legitimacy to their “project”, at the centre of which is their desire to win the Champions League. And who better to help them achieve that goal than the four-time Champions League winner who has also been part of the first team that successfully defended the Champions League earlier this summer?

However, the super-competitive athlete that Ronaldo is, going to the French league wouldn’t be an option for him. The riches of PSG courtesy of their ownership by the Qatari royals have taken them almost out of reach of their domestic competitors. Last year was an aberration as a youthful and unheralded Monaco upset the applecart and won Ligue 1 in an unprecedented campaign but it will be mighty difficult for them to repeat the feat or for any other club to do what the principality outfit did.

In the French league Ronaldo will also not have players of his own stature who would challenge him to raise his game and become even better, something that he gets in spades in the Spanish league with an array of stars on his own team as well as from Lionel Messi at Barcelona.

Manchester United are one of the clubs that he is perennially linked with, and they surely are one of the few clubs capable of meeting Real Madrid’s asking price — whatever that is — as well as Ronaldo’s wage demands — whatever they are.

At Old Trafford, Ronaldo will be reunited with a fan base that adores him to bits and a club that match his ambition of winning everything that they play for. Manchester United also have the deep pockets to sign the players that would complement Ronaldo’s game and the English league is one of the most competitive that Ronaldo could play in.

It certainly hasn’t helped that Real Madrid haven’t quite stood by their superstar in his tax evasion case, making the star feel he is all alone fighting his case.

However, things appeared to have calmed down with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez having a heart-to-heart with Ronaldo and the chances are he will choose to prolong his stay in La Liga in the immediate future.
