At the World Cup in Russia 2018 we will see even two debutants. The small European country Iceland, and the biggest surprise of the qualifications, Panama. This means that this tournament will have more debits than the previous two (Slovakia 2010 and BiH 2014 were the only ones). For the last time, two debutants of one World Cup were seen four decades ago in Argentina, when Tunis and Iran were enrolled in the list of participants. In addition to the first two tournaments (13 in Uruguay in 1930, three in Italy in 1934), the highest number of debutants was seen in 2006. In Germany, for the first time, there were six teams - Angola, Ghana, Togo, Ivory Coast, Trinidad and Tobago and Ukraine the performances of the Czech Republic and Serbia and Montenegro, which are inherited by the previous participants, but did not play in the new format.

Panama's team secured a debutant show at the World Cup in Russia after the dramatic and exciting final qualifying day of the CONCACAF Zone. The goal worth the historic placement of the World Cup was scored by Roman Torres in the 88th minute of the match. Earlier, the same player leveled the score after Costa Rican's team first made it to the lead with the goal of Vénégas. After the historic success, Panama President Juan Carlos Varela marked that day as a national holiday and freed all institutions from work in order to truly celebrate the placement in Russia. The victory of Panama means the first non-participation of the United States at the World Cup after 32 years of continuity. The United States lost to Trinidad and Tobago 2-1 and left without a World Cup.

Panama got very close to the fourth round of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup. In their last match, which was against the US national football team, they played a 2-1 and 90-minute game. and were ready to reach the playoffs qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup, but received two goals in the extra time and were eliminated, with Mexico taking the place in the playoffs instead of Panama. Panama finished as a runner-up in 2005 at the CONCACAF Golden Cup and in 2013 at the same competition. Panama also competed in the subregional Central American Championship that they won in 2009.

Head coach of the team is the Colombian Hernán Darío Gómez. The captain of the team is Felipe Baloy who plays for Minicipal Football Club in Guatemala. There is no known world star in this team, most of the players play in the South American championships. Goalkeeper Jaime Penedo is playing in Romania for the team of Dinamo Bucharest. Gabriel Torres plays for Lausanne-Sport in Switzerland, Ismael Díaz maybe the greatest hope this nation plays for the Deportivo la Coruña team.

Certainly the very placement for the World Cup for this little cute country is a huge success they have nothing to lose in Russia.
