World 5,000m champion aiming to chase double gold at the World Championships

Hellen Obiri, the world 5,000m champion is aiming to chase double gold at the World Championships, in-order to bow out from track competition on a high.

It was confirmed by the Olympian herself last Friday, that with a well designed program in the Qatari capital, she will try her luck in both 5,000 metres and the 10,000 metres distances.

However, there is just one small problem here, and that is of qualification. She needs to qualify in the 10,000 metres race to confirm her slot in her country's team.

Speaking on Friday, she said that despite her absence at the Prefontaine Classic last Sunday, she is in good shape and has recovered from the bruises received during the Stockholm fall.

The champion further said that the London Diamond League meet will be a good opportunity for her to clinch the qualifying times after the Stockholm accident.

She had a good last Thursday, as she was able to clinch a win at the Kenya Defence Forces championships by clocking at 31m: 43s.

May 20 proved to be a very bad & unlucky day for her, as she had to go through some very tough time in Stockholm after she fell very hard and eventually finished twelfth in the 5,000 metres.

One person she has to be on the lookout for is Joyciline (the world half marathon record holder), who was 2nd to her in Nairobi.

Joyciline revealed that she has shelved her marathon plans to focus on securing a slot in the Kenya team for the World Championships. Others include Pauline Korikwiang, Agnes Tirop, Linet Masai and Stella Chesang (Commonwealth 10,000m champion).

Since she won the gold in the 2017 World Championships in London that allows her to automatically qualify for the 5,000m race. But in-order to run in the 10,000m, she'll have to hit the qualifying mark in the race and be among the top 2 at the Kenyan trials later in July.
