Thomas Cup - World Men's Team Championships - 2020

The Thomas Cup 2020 officially known as BWF Thomas Cup, is the 31st edition of this prestigious tournament. It is often referred to as the World Men’s Team Championships and teams representing the member nations of the Badminton World Federation, the global governing body of the sport, compete in the tournament. Traditionally, the Thomas Cup had always been won by Asian countries until Denmark became the fifth nation and the first European nation in history to win the Thomas Cup after beating Indonesia 3–2 in the 2016 final. China this year come in as the defending champions and Denmark will be hosting this much awaited tournament. In 2016 when Denmark became the first non-Asian team to win the Thomas Cup.

The draws are out and the Groups for the upcoming tournament look like this:

Group A: Indonesia, Malaysia, Holland and England.

Group B: China, Taiwan, Australia and France.

Group C: Denmark, India, Germany and Algeria.

Group D: Japan, South Korea, Thailand and Canada

Indonesia will definitely enter as the favourites in the tournament with everyone also setting their eyes upon teams like Malaysia, China and India. Denmark too can cast the shadows off and pull of major performances with their players having a good experience of playing at the international stage.  Injuries to two key players Lee Zii Jia and Leong Jun Hao have dealt a massive blow to Malaysia’s preparations for the Thomas Cup Finals. Thus, the Badminton Academy of Malaysia will be struggling to get their two singles before the tournament begins. This plays a major role in the outcome of the event as the Malaysian team included the rising stars and crowd favourites which made the team a contender for the Cup.

Critics and experts have been banking on the Indonesian team to be in the finals considering their star-studded line up which includes players like Anthony Ginting, Jonathan Christie, Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo, Marcus Fernaldi Gideon, Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan.

In the men’s Thomas Cup, Indonesia lead the way with 13 titles, while China are second with 9 to their name. It will be interesting to see who comes out as the champion this year, since all the countries and suffered due to the COVID pandemic and the players will be coming out of a long break without much match practice outside their teammates.
