Azerbaijan Eurovision Odds

Aisel Mammadova has been internally selected by İctimai Television to represent Azerbaijan at Eurovision 2018. Jazz singer Aisel was born into a musical family in Baku, Azerbaijan. She studied at a music school and in 2010 she graduated from Azerbaijan's State Conservatory. Aisel has competed in several Jazz music festivals in Azerbaijan. In 2014, Aisel represented Georgia at Turkvision together with Ayla Shiriyeva.

Mammadov can safely be called a versatile personality. From childhood, she writes music and sings, what were the prerequisites to obtain the appropriate education in piano. But she works in a different field – she's a diplomat. In addition, Aysel regularly takes part in beauty contests. Not so long ago, she played a major role in Azerbaijani TV series "Alien". This is her debut on TV, not in cinema. Earlier, talented girl could be seen in the creation of the Indian kinodela "Sunrise". She also starred in the Azerbaijani film "the Gift". In addition, Mammadov four years working in the Azerbaijan drama theatre named after Heydar Aliyev, which is located in Tbilisi.

Based on the mixed reaction to “X My Heart”, it appears everyone was hoping for “Skeletons” mark II or the female incarnation of “Hold Me”. Fans were waiting for a super-cool pop-ballad and are now malfunctioning over what is an efficient, but highly effective earworm.

Fans need to step back from the momentary hissyfit and recognise the anthemic and international qualities of Aisel’s song. This is incredibly uplifting and is the sort of track that would be used on TV montages as images of incredible sporting achievements are replayed. It even has cinematic qualities and I can picture it as the lead track to Avatar or something of that ilk. It’s essentially Azerbaijan’s version of “Sea of Flags” or “Rainmaker”; two very anthemic tracks that never actually took park in Eurovision. Zlata Ognevich’s “Gravity” had a very similar feel, albeit with greater vocal impact. Also Zlata got away with many more dodgy lyrics than “Misty moon I’m your loon.”

The slight negativity is probably born out of the upbeat nature of the song and the fact it is so easy to dump all ‘dream team’ compositions into the generic Kontopoulos box.” X My Heart” has more layers to it, probably due to Bjurman’s influence. There’s even a passing resemblance to P!nk’s “What About Us”. The production isn’t as rich and the percussion is a bit plasticky, but I doubt that will matter in May provided Fokas unveils a much needed staging masterclass and improves Azerbaijan’s chances from big outsider to dark horse.

AISEL will be the 11th artist to represent Azerbaijan in the Eurovision Song Contest. Despite the country’s initial success in the contest, AISEL’s participation at the contest will follow a recent run of average to poor results. From 2008 to 2013 the country failed to finish outside of the top 10, even managing to finish in 3rd, 2nd and 1st in 2009, 2013 and 2011 respectively. However, since 2014 Azerbaijan has failed to finish inside the top 10, with this year’s representative, Dihaj, earning a respectable 14th place for the country with her song “Skeletons”.
