Iran Top Team Goalscorer

Odd unit: EU | UK | US

Iran's football team entered the World Cup in Russia in 2018, after they defeated Uzbekistan with 2-0 in Group A in Asian qualifications. Iran has entered the World Cup for the fifth time, and for the first time will participate in two consecutive Mundials. The Iran team did not receive goal in the qualifications, and since 2011, it has been led by former Real Madrid coach and Portuguese head coach of national team Carlos Keirose. Iran remain unbeaten in the group stage and remarkably has not conceded a single goal during the campaign, underlining its credentials as one of Asia’s football giants.

Although this is their fifth participation in the World Cup so far they have not achieved any significant success. Irans first appearance was in 1978, in the FIFA World Cup in Argentina. Iran lost two of three group stage matches against the Netherlands and Peru. Iran played a draw with Scotland 1-1. Their second participation in the World Cup was in 1998 in France. This was a special competition for Iran because they noticed the first win of the FIFA World Cups against the US team. Although special, yet one victory was not enough for the Iran team to pass the group stage. In the other two matches, the team of Iran lost to Yugoslavia and Germany. Their third World Cup in Germany in 2006 was followed by high expectations and enthusiasm in the country. But still it was not enough because Iran lost to Mexico and Portugal, and managed to play a draw with Angola. And they did not pass differently in their last appearance at this competition. In Brazil 2014 they lost in the group stage of Argentina and Bosnia and Herzegovina and played a draw with Nigeria. Although they almost always quite successfully and powerfully pass the qualifications they always have difficulties in the World Cups.

Their head coach is the Portuguese Carlos Queiroz who took the team in 2011 and successfully led them to the World Cup in Brazil. There is not a big prominent football star in their team. Most of the players play in the home Iranian championship. Ashkan Dejaagah is their captain, he is former Wolfsburg player who now plays in the home championship for Persepolis f.c. Alireza Jahanbakhsh who plays for AZ Alkmar, Karim Ansarifard who plays for Olimpiacos and Sardar Azmoun who plays in Russian Premier league for the team Rubin Kazan, should be the players who will make a difference on the pitch.

Perhaps this world championship is the chance for the feat of this national team.
