Joburg Open is one of the Oldest national championships for golf being held in the World and established in 1903, Hosted by the city of Johannesburg, South Africa. The top tournaments of this championship are Sunshine Tour, and from the year 1997, the European tour is also co-sanctioning the tournament. Also, once it comes under the list of the several tournaments held by the European Tour, and in December 2018, this event became the part of the Open qualifying series paving its way for the entry of three non-exemplary players Into the Open championship.


The first event was organized in the year 1903, on the establishment itself, following a series of matches held for over ten years. In the beginning, the competition was limited to a game of about 36 holes; later on, in the year 1908, it was extended to about 72 holes. Initially, Non-whites were allowed to take part and play in the competition, but when Papwa Sewgolum finished second in 1963, Black people weren't allowed to play in this tournament.

Aftermath, since 2011, this championship is being held in Johannesburg, hosted by the Serengeti Golf club for 2011 and 2012. But from 2013 onwards till now, it is hosted by the Glendower gold club.

Details of the Event

One of the Salient reasons the European tour is sanctioning this championship is that it majorly attracts many fund money and more required fields. The event was played at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club in South Africa until the year 2017 and started in 2007.

Tournament Details

Initially, the event was organized in January or February. Later on, it was shifted to December, past 2017 and became a Tri sanctioned event, with Asian tour joining hands with Sunshine and European tour to Sponsor the event. The player count was initially 210, but the count increased from 210 to 240.  Consecutively after 2019, it was announced by the officials that the event would be revived in November 2020 and will be played at the Randpark golf club with relevant support from Johannesburg City along with a reward of R19.5 Million.

It is going to be the first-ever international golf tournament for men on South African fairways after nine months and a timely boost for the South African economy. It emerges after the prolonged lockdown for Covid-19.

Winners of the Tournament

With the beginning of this championship in the year 1903, Laurie Waters won the championship, and afterward, someone or the other kept on winning the tournament. The last winner for the tournament in 2017 was Subhankar Sharma making it significant, and the winner for this year hasn't been finalized yet! The highest score was done by Richard Stene in the year 2013, with a score of 260. The tournament kicked off in 2007 and boasted an impressive series of past champions such as Major winner namely Charl Schwartzel along with multiple champions  of the European Tour George Coetzee, Branden Grace, Darren Fichardt, and Andy Sullivan.
