Who is Vladimír Weiss, the manager of the Georgian National football team?

Vladimír Weiss is the current manager of the Georgian National team after taking over in March 2016. Weiss was born in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia on 22 September 1964. Weiss has a son who plays football for Qatari club Al-Gharafa named Vladimír Weiss, his father is also called Vladimír Weiss who played for Czechoslovakia.

Weiss was previously a professional footballer who came through the youth academies of Rapid Bratislava and ČH Bratislava. He then went on to play for Agro Hurbanovo, Inter Bratislava, Sparta Praha, Petra Drnovice, DAC Dunajská Streda, 1. FC Košice and Artmedia Petržalka between the years of 1984 and 2000. Weiss also made 19 appearances for Czechoslovakia and 12 appearances for the Slovakian National team from 1988 to 1995.

Weiss played football in midfield across the duration of his career and he managed to score many goals with 43 goals scored in 258 competitive appearances across his club career.

Throughout his managerial career, Weiss has taken management jobs at Artmedia Petržalka, Saturn Moscow Oblast, Artmedia Petržalka, the Slovakian National team, Slovan Bratislava, Kairat and the Georgian National team. As a manager, Weiss has won many honours including 2 Corgoň Liga titles, 1 Slovak Cup, 2 Kazakhstan Cups along with a runners-up medal in the Kazakhstan Premier League. He’s also made appearances in the UEFA Champions League Group stage, the Europa League Group stage and the Round of 16 in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Weiss had an extremely successful time with the Slovakian National team as he led the side to their first-ever major tournament after beating Poland 1-0 to guarantee their spot in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. In the World Cup, Slovakia beat Italy 3-2 to qualify for the knockout stages, however, they were knocked out by eventual finalists the Netherlands. Weiss left the National team after they failed to qualify for the 2012 European Championships.

Georgia have been given a difficult group for the European Championship qualifiers with big matches coming up against Ireland, Switzerland and Denmark. Although it is a little early to see Georgia competing on the big stage after seeing them lose 5-1 to Denmark, Weiss is an experienced manager who could take this Georgian team to the next level in the coming years with a view to qualify for a major tournament in the future.
