Biathlon at the 2022 Winter Olympics and women's pursuit

The two disciplines within biathlon that have the most in common are probably sprint and pursuit. They're also the ones that are usually most popular amongst the spectators. Pursuit usually begins where sprint ends. But no matter similarities, pursuit has several unique aspects. Each contesting women needs to ski 10 kilometers during five laps. Each contestant gets to shoot in two position in each range. Once in prone position and once in standing position. The skier that fails to hit the target needs to go an extra lap that is equal to 150 meters. So a miss greatly adds to the final time of  the skier. So it's not just a question about keeping a high tempo, but also about being able to keep the concentration as to not make too many mistakes. That's why pursuit is such a demanding event.

Starting position is based on how the women scored in the previous event, usually being sprint. The contestants gets to shoot on a first come first serve basis. So it's not just a matter of time and points, but also about being able to secure the perhaps most advantageous shooting position. That's why pursuit often is a competition high in both adrenaline and intensity. Amongst spectators, it's usually a favorite. Not only due to the fact that it's considered an extension of sprint, but also due to the fact that strength and weaknesses really begin to show during pursuit. If you're planning to speculate on the outcome of biathlon during the Winter Olympics, keeping an eye on pursuit is a must.
