Senegal's footballers beat South Africa away with the result of 2: 0 and secured their place at the World Cup in Russia. Do you remember El Haji Diouf and Papa Boubo Diop? To those who watched World Cup in Japan and South Korea in 2002 these two names are still well known. Many older football fans recall past selections, which at the World Cup in 2002 made a real boom and were a selection for which "everyone" cheered, because of their fighting spirit and the scaling down of "big" selections.

It was the 31st of May 2002 and the first match at the opening of the World Cup, and the current World and European Champion, France, met with his former colony and debutant at the World Championships, the Senegalese national team. The French team with Zidane, Deshamp, Desai, Makelele, Henry, Trezeguet, Vier and other aces suffered defeat 0: 1, and the only goal for Senegal was scored by Pape Bouba Diop who, then was player of French team Lens . Otherwise, 21 of the 23 players that were called for Senegal team were playing in French clubs. Although many were impressed by the game in Senegal in their first match, they were not given the chance to remain undefeated in the second round against the Danish squad, but Senegal's players had also razed in this match and managed to play a draw 1: 1, the only goal for Senegal scored is Salif Diao. Last round, Uruguay's selection was favourite against Senegal's selection, but this time again, the fanatical spirit of the dark-skinned players was big, they didn’t lose once again and played 3: 3. Senegal finished second and was in the 1/8 finals, behind Denmark, who defeated France in the final match. Senegal went on Sweden's selection. In the 1/8 finals, Senegal's selection met with another representative of the Scandinavian school of football, Sweden's selection, which was defeated after the "golden goal", and the double striker in this match was Henri Camara. Here the selection of Senegal showed a great character because came back after Sweden's 1: 0 lead. The end of the fairy tale for Senegal's selection was in the 1/4 finals against Turkey's selection, which was a better opponent throughout the match, but they did not have enough strength to win overtime as against Sweden, and they were  defeated 0: 1. Aliou Cisse is the head coach of this new generation of that is much expected. Leader and biggest star is Liverpool’s player Sadio Mané. Captain of the team is Cheikhou Kouyaté who also plays in the Premier league for West Ham United. Other major football talents and stars are Kalidou Koulibaly who plays for Napoli, Idrissa Gueye from Everton, Diafra Sakho from West Ham United, M'Baye Niang from Torino, Henri Saivet and Mohamed Diamé from Newcastle, Khouma Babacar from Fiorentina and many more young talents.

The last time they were at the World Cup, they showed us that in football everything is possible. We hope they will again show a fighting game.
