UFC 229: McGregor vs Khabib

The biggest event of the year takes place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The highly anticipated return of the former two-weight world champion Conor McGregor against the current lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov.

It’s a style vs style matchup with Khabib, being a world class wrestler facing an elite striker in McGregor. McGregor will return to the octagon after a two year hiatus. His last fight was with Eddie Alvarez, which he won via knockout in the first round and winning two belts simultaneously, becoming the first ever UFC fighter to become a two-division champion at the same time.

After his historical feat, McGregor went on to challenge the all-time great Floyd Mayweather in the Boxing Ring. The fight was one of a kind and broke all pay-per-view records, unfortunately, McGregor lost in the tenth round via Technical Knock Out, but he showcased his mettle in a totally different sport and proved his grit and tenacity. Standing toe to toe against a legend like Floyd will have a huge impact on Conor’s striking ability in the fight to come.

In an interview with ESPN, Dana White Said

“When you talk about pound-for-pound best in the world, this is a guy who’s actually living proof of pound-for-pound. He jumps from weight class to weight class and fights people in different weight classes, he boxed Floyd Mayweather, and he’s literally willing to fight anybody in the world who thinks they’re better than him. And that’s what makes him so popular. This isn’t a crossroads fight, this is another fight to cement his legacy as one of the best to ever do it.”

Nurmagomedov is no joke either. He has an untarnished record of 26-0. He is a fierce wrestler and a relentless pressure fighter. He trains at the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, California with world champions like Daniel Cormier, Luke Rockhold, and Cain Velasquez.

He has been calling out McGregor since 2016 with little luck. In the past few months, Khabib was involved in a minor altercation with Conor’s teammate and UFC fighter Artem Lobov. In response, McGregor and his team, assaulted a bus full of fighters, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Assault charges were pressed against McGregor and he has been vindicated after pleading guilty. McGregor avoided jail time and was ordered to perform community service and anger management, among other requirements.

Khabib did not hesitate in showing his true feelings towards McGregor, in an interview he mentioned his strategy to punish McGregor.

“How can we fight after this fight when I change his face? Even if I have a chance for a submission or choke, I’m going to keep punishing, talk with him, enjoy inside the cage. I can’t wait.”

McGregor is coming into the fight as an underdog. The betting odds favor Nurmagomedov. The fight can go to either side. Let's see what happens inside the Octagon. Will Khabib shock the world and finish McGregor? Or will McGregor collect another head? The fans cannot miss out this one.
