Matthew Bloomfield – Manager Wycombe

Matthew Bloomfield is an English professional football coach and a former player who is currently the head coach of Wycombe. Bloomfield joined the Wycombe Wanderes as a teenager in 2003 and has since made 558 first-team appearances in all three tiers of the English football league. He has spent an astonishing 18 years of his life with the club.

Professional Career

In August 2001, Bloomfield began his professional career with Ipswich Town as a trainee. However, manager Joe Royle let him go because Portman Road had an abundance of midfielders, and he joined Wycombe Wanderers in December 2003.

Bloomfield was a member of the Wycombe team that won promotion to the Championship in 2020, starting as captain in the championship game against Oxford United at Wembley Stadium, where they won 2-1 to advance the team to the Championship for the first time in the club's history.

The following season, Bloomfield made 16 Championship appearances for Wycombe, which would turn out to be his final full season as a Wycombe player as he started to take on more responsibilities after being nominated a first team coach.

At the end of the season, the club was relegated back to League One, and Bloomfield made just one more appearance for the club, captaining the side in an EFL Cup first round fixture against Exeter, which Wycombe won on penalties.

Bloomfield was replaced at halftime by Oliver Pendlebury after suffering a concussion, and the club doctor informed him that he might no longer be able to play football. On February 2, 2022, Bloomfield announced his retirement from professional football.

Bloomfield captained Wycombe Wanderers for nearly a decade and was a member of four promotions with the club, climbing from the fourth tier to the Championship. He appeared in 558 games for Wycombe and scored 40 goals.

League Two team Colchester United hired Bloomfield as their head coach in September 2022. Colchester was one point above the relegation zone at the time of his appointment, in 21st place after ten games. Colchester's sporting director Dmitri Halajko said: "We interviewed five of the 10 people on our shortlist. We learned Matt's name via a few in-game referrals as one of the top emerging coaches. He impressed at every stage of the process when we asked him to put together an application.”

On 21 February 2023, following the departure of long-term manager Gareth Ainsworth to Queens Park Rangers, Bloomfield agreed in principle to return to Wycombe Wanderers as manager.
