Group D of Euro Basket 2017, will be located in Istanbul.

Hosts Turkey, will have a tough task because their opponents are Great Britain, Russia, Belgium, Latvia, and one of the leading contenders for the title Serbia.

As always, when they are hosting a major competition in the Turkish national team has high hopes. Whenever they play in front of their crowd, they record at least 50% better results. Just remember the European Championship back in 2001 and the World Championship in 2010.

But, the biggest problem is, that the star of this country Enes Canter will not appear because of political reasons and issues between him and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Another big man, Emre Asik is also uncertain at this moment after he had health problems during which he lost a lot of weight. The leading star will be Ersan Ilyasova, who had a solid NBA season with 13.1 points and 5.9 rebounds.

Latvian selection is one of the most talented in this championship, but we are yet to see whether they have a quality or just talent. The best player and one of the leading stars of this contest, Kristaps Porzingis will be the key player, and after a fantastic individual season, he is coming to Europe to confirm his reputation as one of the biggest prospects in NBA.

Apart from him, Latvia has several other players. Bertans brothers, Janis Tima, Janis Strelnieks, etc., and this will be the chance for them to explode and reach at least the knock-out stage.

The same goal has the Russian Federation team. Although it hasn't been any official confirmation, the only Russian player in NBA Timofey Mozgov should join the national side. The core of this team will be built from players who are in Russian clubs such as CSKA Moscow, Locomotive, Zenith, and Khimki. The Russians are very experienced, and they will rely mostly on defense, but they do not have the quality to go deep in this championship. The second stage is their maximum.

Serbia, as we said, is the second biggest favorite for the gold medal after Spain. There have been some uncertainties about the final roster because one of the brightest stars in NBA Nikola Jokic, still didn't confirm his arrival. Nemanja Bjelica is injured, and this could be a potential setback for this squad.

Their leader will be, as always, one of the best point guards in the world Milos Teodosic. Bogdan Bogdanovic had an excellent season in which he was the key player in Fenerbahce's winning the Euro League. Boban Marjanovic is coming after a solid season with the Pistons where he finally got the chance at the end of the campaign, and he dominated the courts.

With all due respect, Belgium and the United Kingdom are two of the weakest teams in this group, and they will decide about the last place in Group D.

Projected standings after the end of the first round:

Serbia, Turkey, Latvia, Russia, Belgium, Great Britain.
