With increasing amount of fan following and rebranding of the league NIFL is destined to success and up rise in coming years.

Each year 12 teams compete in NIFL for the title. Founded in 1890 this is the top level league in Northern Ireland. Not as famous as BPL or Scottish leagues but with time the level of football in NIFL is gradually progressing. Just like PL 12 clubs compete with each other and play 3 games with every club with 2 matches at home and 1 away or 2 away and one at home. After 33 matches the top 6 play once with each other and bottom 6 play once with each other to complete 38 games season. In relegation battle the team at 12th place is relegated to championship while the 11th place team plays a two match leg with the runner ups of championship to decide who gets to play in NIFL.

The NIFL is getting serious attention with its champions qualifying for UEFA Champions League and runner ups qualifying for UEFA Europa League. The champions of 2016/17 season of NIFL are Linfield and they have qualified for UEFA Champions league playoff. Ballymena United secured their place in Europa League this year. Linfield and Crusaders are the hot favorite to bet your money on for the championship battle in the coming season.

The Northern Ireland Football League assumed responsibility for the top three divisions of national domestic football from the IFA in 2014, putting forward plans to improve the scene of football in Northern Ireland. The plans include improving stadiums, status in European competitions, league structure, commercial image of the competitions, as well as spreading out match kick-off times to be more variable and reintroducing previously abandoned competitions for clubs to compete in.

Highlights of individual Premiership matches are available online via the BBC Sport website. BBC NI also produces The Irish League Show, a weekly highlights show available to watch via BBC iPlayer. Live online streams of matches are also broadcast by Bwin. Recently Sky Sports have re-commenced branding Irish League Games Live.
