Championship top scorer odds
The Football League Championship Top Scorer, is an annual English association football title given to the top goalscorer at the end of the Football League Championship season.
Who will be the Championship Top Scorer 2016/2017?
The 2016/17 Championship season may be coming to an end, with the title now seemingly a two horse race between Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion, but there is still plenty of time for the tables to turn.
Even if there are no major twists and turns in the title race, at least the run-in for the league’s top goalscorer award looks likely to offer some excitement over the last few months of the campaign, with four free-scoring forwards, if not more, still in the running to land the award.
There are plenty of names still in with a chance, but these four goalscorers appear to be the most likely candidates:
Chris Wood - Leeds United
Leeds United struggled in the early stages of the season, falling as low as 22nd back in September. However, Australian striker Chris Wood has since stepped in to save the day, netting 24 times in his first 38 appearances of the season.
That feat makes Wood favourite to clinch the award, but with a number of games still to play, he will have to keep working hard right until the last. Yet, with 13 goals from his last 13 league matches, Wood will be more than confident that he can keep up his incredible form.
Dwight Gayle - Newcastle United
Despite missing a number of games in recent months, due to a recurring hamstring injury which has hampered the goalscorer’s form, Newcastle United frontman Dwight Gayle finds himself among the contenders for the Championship’s Player of the Season and top goalscorer awards, having scored 21 goals in the league so far.
A few months ago, Gayle would have been the overwhelming favourite to clinch the goalscorer award, having produced some fantastic early-season form that helped to put Newcastle United in the running for the title. However, it now seems unlikely that Gayle will overtake Wood, considering that he has scored just twice so far in 2017.
Tammy Abraham - Bristol City
Incredibly, Tammy Abraham, one of the Championship’s most consistent goalscorers this season, is aged just 19. Few predicted that the Chelsea loanee would produce such brilliant form this season, but the youngster has stepped up his game and will likely be rewarded with a place in the Chelsea squad next season.
With 19 goals to his name, Abraham is still some way off of the top spot, but given that he has produced so many goals in a side that are struggling to stay away from the relegation zone makes his achievements all the more impressive. In fact, without the prodigy’s goals this season, Bristol City may have been playing League One football next term.
Glenn Murray - Brighton & Hove Albion
Brighton have been pushing for a place in the Premier League for a number of years, but have always fallen just short of achieving their goal. However, the arrival of Bournemouth striker Glenn Murray has made all the difference for the club this season and they now look odds-on to secure their place in the top flight next term.
Aged 33, Murray came with plenty of experience at this level and ultimately gave Brighton that final push, with 18 goals and four assists from 37 appearances so far. While some way off of Wood’s 24 goals, there is still time for the veteran goalscorer to make one final push for the Championship top goalscorer award.
