Who wins Italian second division 2017/2018?

Odd unit: EU | UK | US

The 86th season of the Italian Serie B will begin on August. 22 teams will fight for the two direct promotion spots to the Serie A. Then 6 teams will battle in the playoff rounds for the third spot. Last season Hellas Verona, SPAL and Benevento got promoted. With some important teams still in the league and some strong additions from the Serie A, this season will be a long and hard fight for any team that wants to be playing in the elite league the next year.

From the relegated teams, FC Empoli is the one who looks in better shape for this journey. They’ve fighted until the last match but that proven to be not enough. However, they might have to incorporate some important signings, as the team managed by Giovanni Martusciello is going through a major transition, with at least 10 players leaving the squad. US Palermo had an awful season at the Serie A and will try to bounce back. The mixture between young and veteran players wasn’t enough for the first league of Italy and now they’ll have to adapt again to a difficult league such as this one. Players like Carlos Embalo, Ilija Nestorovski and the young Simone Lo Faso are important pieces that need to be retained if they want to aim for the promotion. Pescara was, without doubt, the worst team of the Serie A. And, from the three relegated teams, is the one with the hardest time this next season. Not only they’re losing important players such as Jean-Christophe Bahebeck, Gianluca Capriari and Alberto Cerri among others, but also they’re unclear about future transfers, as the financial situation is delicate. However, the team managed by Zdenek Zeman might hold enough good players to dispute the first spots. It’s yet to be seen if that’s enough.

From the remaining teams in the Serie B, Frosinone FC is one of the main candidates. The last season they played the playoffs only because of goal difference, and this season they might want to assure the promotion spot directly. The team won’t seems to be undergoing a major transition, especially in attack, and will keep some of their most important players such as the forwards Federico Dionisi and Daniel Ciofani, with only some minor adjustments, this team can take the league if they want to.

AC Perugia and Spezia Calcio are in similar situations. Both teams are always contenders for the league, with both of them playing the playoffs the past season. However, they’re revamping their squads and a lot of the current players won’t be playing for them the next season. In an early phase of this transition, it’s hard to say how these teams will perform, but whoever makes the best signings will be in a good starting place to compete. The same can be said about Carpi FC, who after their relegation the past season, they were close to a comeback to the Serie A. This season they might need some more quality in the squad, but with a lot of the players leaving, it’s hard to predict what will be the outcome.
