Matt Gray prepares for a More Competitive future at Sutton United

When Matt Gray joined Sutton United in 2019, they were a team with a largely underwhelming presence in English Football. All that changed when they made it out of the National League for the first time in the 2020-21 season. Their promotion to EFL League Two showed that Gray had a strong playbook, and the team now has their sights set on a League One promotion in just two short years. To climb to that new tier of football, they’ll need to find some more prowess in the league.

His appointment in 2019 came after the resignation of previous coach, Paul Doswell. In just his second season, he led them to the League Two promotion. The Us are a team that has anticipated a big break to the top for a long time now. With Matt Gray, they are finally in a position where a better future can be secured.

For Gray, that road is paved with an unexpectedly simplistic approach. He’s gunning for that EFL spot, and he’s doing that by focusing on racking up enough points for the playoffs. “When we get to 50 points, I will tell them it’s a huge achievement… the next target would be more often than not 75 points.”

The contributions made by all the players have been distributed evenly. The squad has displayed a lot of flexibility in regards to their strength. 13 players have scored so far this season and the chemistry between them is a marvel to witness.

For Sutton to secure that spot in the EFL, they’ll need to get on top of their current roster. The recent departure of players like Isaac Olaofe and David Ajiboye has made a substantial dent on what the team is capable of.

Things haven’t always been smooth sailing for Matt Gray at Sutton and certain performances had fans of the Us undervaluing his effectiveness for the team. A defeat to Tranmere Rovers in late 2022 showed that they were not invincible. The Rovers delivered a home defeat to Sutton, dampening their confidence.

This performance didn’t stop Sutton from bouncing back eventually as they were able to take ten points in five games, only finding one loss against Leyton Orient, a team that is in strong contention for the League Two win. Matt Gray managed to secure Manager of the Month in December, an amazing result after a tough few games in the months before.

For his own managerial career, Gray firmly believes that there’s a lot to look forward to in the future. At the young age of 40, he’s learning every day and he’s not getting carried away. “I’ve been in football all my life and I know how quickly it can soon change.”  As one of the managers determined to make his mark in a team, he’s on track to be immortalized at Sutton United.
