The Players Championship 2021

The Players Championship is going to be staged at the Ponte Verda Beach, Florida, United States of America. Since 1982, the match is being played at the Stadium Course Sawgrass.

The match will be played as stroke play from 11 to 14 March 2021. Since 2019, it became the highest paying golf tournament in the world with $12.5 million as prize money, and it has surpassed the purse of the US Open. In 2020, the prize money was raised to $15 million.

Although The Players Championship is not among the major ones, still it has a unique place in golf. Like the highest prize money which generates the highest share for the winner at the rate of 18%; $2.7 million. Furthermore, the winner earns eighty points toward the professional golf ranking. The winner also gets a 3 years invitation for the Masters Open and the US Open, along with a 5 years exemption to all the matches under the PGA tour.

The playoff format of The Players Championship has been changed to a three-hole aggregate since 2014. Previously it was a sudden death rule. The playoff three holes start from the 17th, one of the most famous holes in the world, its name is Island Green.

Started in 1974, the best score of the tournament is 264, which is 24 under par in four days or 72 holes.

Jack Nicklaus has won this tournament three times, and five others have done it twice, including Tiger Woods and Davis Love III.  But surprisingly, no player could ever defend the title the very next year. Jack’s all three wins occurred in the alternating years; 1974, 1976, and 1978.

Kim Si-woo is the youngest golfer to lift this trophy, he won the tournament in 2017 with an aggregate of ten under par with a lead of 3 strokes over Ian Poulter and Louis Oosthuizen. In the edition of The Players Championship 2020, the first round had been played, where Hideki Matsuyama was leading with nine under par. But the match was canceled due to COVID-19, and each participant received 52,000 which is almost half of the prize money.

The former number one professional golfer Rory Mcilroy is going to defend the title he won in 2019 by playing 16 under par in 72 holes. Due to its high prize money and being a ranking match, all the top players are expected to been seen in the field. Dustin Thomson with Brooks Keopka will be on the list of the top dogs. While Hideki Matsuyama is also in great form and can outstroke the top golfers.
