PDC World Championship 2021

The weather is getting colder, nights are drawing in and winter is getting closer. This all means just one thing, the start of the PDC World Championship is fast approaching!

This year’s tournament will start on the 18th December and the final will take place in the new year on January 4th. The total prize pot is the same as last years, a whopping £2.5 million with the winner taking a very nice £500,000.

The World Championship will as usual take place at Alexandra Palace in London, but sadly that incredible Ally Pally atmosphere we have become so used to will be missing due to restrictions put in place in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Contenders

Peter Wright is the reigning World Champion having seen off Michael van Gerwen in last years final and he is certainly in with a chance of going all the way again. Snakebite is likely to enter the tournament as second seed and has recently started gathering some form winning the European Championship and progressing to the semi-final of the Premier League.

Usually Michael van Gerwen would go into the World Championship as heavy favourite to win it, having won it on 3 occasions and making at least the semi-final in 7 of the last 8 years. However, in more ways than one this year is not usual and MVG’s form post-lockdown has been extremely unconvincing, losing matches that he really should not be losing. Despite all of this it is testament to his dominance over the past few years that MVG will still go in as top seed and you should discount him at your peril.

Gerwyn Price is still relatively new to the PDC tour and last season saw him reach the last 4 of the World Championship for the first time. The World Number 3 Welshman has kicked on from there, winning the World Grand Prix and World Series as well as reaching the final of the UK Open. Both the form and talent are there, and Price has a great chance to leave a mark on this year’s tournament.

The other semi finalist from last year is Nathan Aspinall who is on track to be seeded 6th this time around. The Englishman is still new to the tour, but such is his presence in big tournaments it seems like he has been around for ages. He will be looking to kick on here and take his game to another level.

Glen Durrant has been the story of this year so far, winning the Premier League on his debut in the tournament and he looks very capable of a deep run in the World Championship. If he manages this, he will cement his name amongst the world’s very best players.

With the usual 96 players qualified it ensures that every single one of the World’s best players will be present in London, this will ensure a great tournament and another tough one for the bookies to call.

PDC World Darts Championship 2021 will be held after Players Championship Finals 2020.
