Who Can Stop Van Gerwen in 2019?

We have had just one tournament on the PDC calendar in 2019 and the winner was Michael van Gerwen.  Fresh from a break following his success at the World Championship, the Dutchman showed little in the way of rustiness as he cruised to the Masters title in Milton Keynes.

It is a tournament Van Gerwen loves and he has won the Masters title on each of the last five occasions so it was little surprise to see him succeed.

The Premier League will also be up and running again this season with the news that Gary Anderson has been forced to pull out with a back problem.  While no one likes to see a fellow professional injured, this has opened the door for Van Gerwen in the Premier League this year.

The world number one has won the Premier League three times in a row and is aiming to make it four in 2019. If he can do so he will equal Phil Taylor’s record and could easily go on to set a new record of five straight victories.

Van Gerwen has appeared in each of the last six Premier League finals and with Anderson not taking part this year, the route to the final has become a lot easier.

The next major event in 2019 is the UK Open and this was Van Gerwen’s first major setback in 2018. He was eliminated at the Round of 64 stage and will want to make amends this year by going all the way to the final.

The World Matchplay was another tournament where Van Gerwen went out in the early stages and will want to do better this season.  A first round exit at the hands of Jeffrey de Zwaan, the same man who defeated him at the UK Open, came as a big shock and Anderson went on to lift the title.

Nonetheless, Van Gerwen will start the event as favourite with the bookmakers but Anderson will hope to be back to defend his title in July.  You must go back to 2016 to find the last time Van Gerwen won the World Matchplay and he will be fully focused on winning the trophy for the third time in his career.

Other major events to look out for in 2019 include the World Grand Prix in which van Gerwen will be the defending champion plus the Champions League of Darts, a tournament he is yet to win. We then move into the Grand Slam of Darts, which was won by Gerwyn Price last season and the Players Championship prior to the PDC World Championship.

Van Gerwen is sure to be the favourite in every event he enters but pay special attention to those which he failed to win last year.  The UK Open, World Matchplay, Champions League of Darts and Grand Slam of Darts are events Van Gerwen will be aiming to add to his collection in 2019.

Having won the 2019 World Championship, Van Gerwen has confidence running through his veins and he could go on to claim a clean sweep of the major titles this season.
