Who are the Standout Candidates to Win Super Bowl LIX?

It’s the nature of the NFL that despite winning three of the last five editions of the Super Bowl – and losing in the big game in 2021 – the Kansas City Chiefs AREN’T favorites to retain the Vince Lombardi Trophy in 2025.

That accolade goes to the Detroit Lions, who have run up a hugely impressive W11 L1 start to the season (at the time of writing).

But they are the only active franchise that has never played at the Super Bowl, let alone won it.

So predicting who will win Super Bowl LIX in February is a minefield… but the teams listed below appear to be the standout candidates.

Lions to Roar?

As far as the bookies are concerned in their Super Bowl 2025 betting, the Lions can overcome their lack of history in the NFL’s Championship game.

Detroit are, at the time of writing, the 5/2 favourites in the NFL betting odds for Super Bowl LIX, with the Chiefs (5/1), Philadelphia Eagles (13/2) and Buffalo Bills (13/2) considered to be the next most likely winners.

There’s no doubt that the Lions have been amongst the most impressive teams in the NFL in 2024-25 so far, with Jared Goff – arguably – amongst the sport’s finest quarterbacks right now.

Their defence is solid enough, they could be the first team to score 400 points in attack and in Amon-Ra St Brown, they have that X Factor of a receiver that can win games.

But that lack of Super Bowl history… can punters overlook their lack of pedigree on the big stage?

Best of the Rest

You wonder quite where the Chiefs would be without Patrick Mahomes, their interstellar quarterback who continues to come up with the goods at clutch moments.

Kansas certainly know how to win football games, as confirmed by their recent Super Bowl history, but do they have the talent – Mahomes aside – to beat the best teams in the NFL?

Team sports fans will always be seduced by eye-catching attacking play, so you can see why there’s been a move on the Baltimore Ravens in the outright odds.

After Week 12 of the regular season, the Ravens had scored 27 touchdowns – no other franchise had served up more, with Lamar Jackson leading the way both in terms of passing touchdowns and yards gained.

Then you’ve got Derrick Henry, one of the best running backs in the business, plus a receiving division featuring the likes of Rashod Bateman and Mark Andrews. Could Baltimore end their decade-long wait for a Super Bowl appearance?

There are those who believe that Saquon Barkley has a chance of being named regular season MVP, with his Philadelphia Eagles side boasting one of the NFL’s very best defences – marshalled by the canny Nick Sirianni.

It could be debated until the cows come home whether it’s elite offence or defence that wins Super Bowls, but if the Ravens or the Eagles show an improvement in their ‘weaker’ department, they could have the all-round class to down the Lions and the Chiefs at Super Bowl LIX.
