Australian Open 2020 Women’s Singles

The Australian Open is the first Grand Slam event of the year and being played in January and February, it makes for a great start to the season.

Melbourne Park is the venue as it has been since 1988, drawing huge crowds during the two weeks of action.  Due to its remoteness geographically, not many players from outside the country played in the tournament during the early 20th century.

This has changed thanks to the ease of travel and the 2020 Australian Open will welcome the world’s best players.  The Australian Open 2020 women’s singles is going to be of particular interest and it has not been easy to predict who will get to the final or win the tournament in recent years.

The defending champion coming into the 2020 Australian Open is Naomi Osaka. The Japanese won her second Grand Slam title in Melbourne and therefore this event will always have a special place in her heart.

Osaka has also won the US Open and the one thing which links these tournaments is the playing surface, which is hard court. Expect to see Osaka determined to defend her title in Australia and she is sure to be up there as one of the bookmakers favourites.

Despite her advancing years and fewer minutes on the tennis court, Serena Williams is always a danger in any tournament she enters. With the Grand Slams likely to be her main focus in the latter stages of her career, expect to see her arrive in Melbourne to make it eight victories at this event.

Williams last won the Australian Open in 2017 and reached the quarter-final in 2019 having not played in 2018. There is no doubt the American legend still has the game to reach the final and Williams is highly likely to be the bookmakers favourite to win the Australian Open 2020 women’s singles if she enters the tournament.

Three of the last four finalists are also likely to feature in the 2020 Australian Open and arguably the most equipped to win the tournament is Simona Halep. The Romanian reached the final in 2018 only to lose in three sets to Caroline Wozniacki. She did not get beyond the fourth round in 2019 but having won the French Open in 2018, Halep has the experience to go all the way in a Grand Slam.

Petra Kvitová was the losing finalist in 2019, losing the deciding set 6-4 to Osaka. It was her first Grand Slam final in almost five years and marked a remarkable comeback from a terrible hand injury suffered during a robbery at her home.  The Czech has never won the Australian Open but will be a leading contender in 2020.

Other names to look out for in the Australian Open 2020 women’s singles include Sloane Stephens, Angelique Kerber, Karolina Pliskova and Elina Svitolina.
