Citadelcross 2019

The sixth race of the Cyclo-cross World Cup will take place on 22nd December 2019 in Namur, Belgium. It will be on the hills around the Citadel and is a race that has become popular quickly because it is a demanding circuit comparable to a Cross-country MTB course.

The course that takes place on Christmas dates, will be even more interesting on the mud if the rain is present, as is usual in this race. The circuit will become a slippery mud pool.

On Sunday there will be four races for different categories: the Men Juniors Race, Men U23 Race, Women Race, and Men Elite Race.

  • The 2019 race preview

A race that has been uninterruptedly played on the Cyclocross World Cup calendar since the 2011-2012 season and in which the current champion of the race, Mathieu Van der Poel, is the cyclist who has been proclaimed champion of the race more times, a total of three times: (2015, 2016 and 2018).

In 2018, the Dutch cyclist dominated the course from start to finish, making the decisive attack in the second lap, stopping the chrono at 1:03:39, and leaving the second classified, Wout Van Aert, more than one minute apart. The third classified, Toon Aerts, reached the finish line almost two minutes after Van der Poel.

But this happened a year ago, right now we have new faces in the top positions.

The surprising start of the season of the young Belgian Eli Iserbyt, with three victories in the first three courses of the season, will keep his morale high, although in his last race, in Koksijde, he finished in 13th place.

And we can't forget Toon Aerts either. The current world champion is in second place in the standings, just 18 points from Iserbyt, and will want to get the maximum possible points to beat his Belgian compatriot.

Finally, other cyclists who will have options to achieve victory in Citadelcross 2019 are Laurens Sweeck, who finished second in Koksijde, Lars Van der Haar, third in Tabor, and Michael Vanthourenhout, third in Bern.

Anyway, Van der Poel, winner in the last two races (the only two he has participated in this year), in Tabor and Koksijde, could be considered as the cyclist to beat in Citadelcross 2019.

Will Van der Poel be able to keep the streak in 2019 and win his fourth Citadelcross 2019 and his third consecutive race in 2019?

Without any doubt a very exciting race, full of mud, awaits us. An opportunity for Van der Poel to approach the top positions of the classification, 9 laps full of surprises and a single objective, to reach the finish line in the last lap in the first place.
