Volta ao Algarve

The Volta ao Algarve, officially Volta ao Algarve em Bicicleta is a stage cycling race that takes place in the region of Algarve, in the south of Portugal, in the middle of February. In the year 2020, it will take place from February 19th to 23th on a tour divided into 5 stages, starting in Portimao, and ending with an individual time trial in Lagoa, after the traditional stage ending in Alto de Malhão in the 4th stage.

Since the creation of the UCI Continental Circuits in 2005, it has been part of the UCI Europe Tour, in the 2.1 category.

The tour has gained a special interest in the cycling world in recent years, as many cyclists ride it to prepare the spring classics, some of its winners are great cyclist: famous cyclists such as Alex Zülle, Floyd Landis, Alberto Contador, Michal Kwiatkowski, Geraint Thomas or Tony Martin.

Preview of Volta ao Algarve

The final classification will be decided from 5 stages where there will be everything: stages with end to the sprint, stages of half mountain and finish line on the top of the hill, and the individual time trial in the last stage to make the last differences for the standings. In the following lines, we will break down the highlights of each stage.

The first stage will take place between the towns of Portimao and Lagos, and will be more than 200km away. Most likely it will be an end to the sprint because the whole bunch should end up compact. An opportunity for sprinters.

The second stage will begin to make a difference. It is a complicated stage where the bunch will climb up to 900m, the highest hill in the Volta ao Algarve, and it will run between Sagres and Fóia. But the most interesting point of the stage will be 7 km from the finish line where the bunch will climb to the Alto de Pomba, and some cyclists will be able to stand out.

The third stage, which will be ridden between Faro and Tavira will again feature the sprinters at the finish line.

For the fourth stage, the cyclists will move to Albufeira, where the stage will begin and will end in the traditional Alto de Malhão, with 2.5km at 10% with a previous climb to this hill 20km from the finish line.

The individual time trial of 20.3 km in the last stage will decide the champion of the Volta ao Algarve. The same route as the previous two years in Lagoa, where Geraint Thomas and Stefan Kung have already won.

An exciting ending for 5 days of pedaling in southern Portugal.
