Top Scorer Serie A

The Serie A season starts on the 25th of August and as the anticipation rises, pundits and fans alike are beginning to speculate as to who will win the coveted Capocannoniere this time round. Last season Fabio Quagliarella sensationally scooped the prize; he scored 26 - a truly remarkable achievement given his age (Quagliarella is 36 years old, making him Serie A's oldest ever top goalscorer)

But this year the competition for Quagliarella is fierce. Let's take a look at the front runners for this season's award...

1)     Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo, of course, needs no introduction. The Juventus man has scored almost 689 goals in his prestigious career - barring disaster, he will be one of only a handful of elite players to hit the 700 mark once he bags his 11th in the coming 2019/20 season. The Portuguese legend, regarded by many as one of the greatest players to step foot on a football pitch, did not enjoy his best season with the Old Lady last campaign; he netted 21 times in the league but was only able to be the 4th top scorer in Italy.

As a player so obsessed with toppling records, Cristiano will be hurting following his exploits last season. By any other player's metric, he enjoyed a good season; but, by his lofty standards, it was a poor one. Having settled into life in Turin, you can bank on Ronaldo itching to set the record straight next season.

Juventus are expected to dominate the Italian top-flight once more next season. New coach Maurizio Sarri has added a number of players to Ronaldo's supporting cast. With these, you'd think Ronaldo will have more shots and more chances than last season - and generally, with Ronaldo more chances equals more goals.

2)     Krzysztof Piątek

Piątek might not have the same era-defining reputation as Ronaldo, but he made waves with his scintillating performances in Italy last season. The Polish international scored 22 goals in his first season in Serie A, outscoring even the great Cristiano and missing out on the top goalscorer award only to Duván Zapata and Fabio Quagliarella, finishing ultimately in an impressive 3rd place. In the 2017/18 season, Piątek was still in his native Poland, his natural eye for goal however earned him a move to Genoa at the start of the following season. He took to elite European football almost immediately, scoring 13 times in his first 19 appearances. In January, AC Milan acquired his services for €35 million and he would go on to net another nine times for the club.

Given his rapid improvement during his time in Italy so far, Piątek looks set for another impressive season. His confidence is surely sky high at this point and, as a player who looks to thrive under pressure, he's bound to be there or thereabouts in the race for the golden boot once again this season.

3)     Mauro Icardi

Argentinean poacher currently plays for Inter Milan but a rollercoaster season last time out might mean that he is forced to move elsewhere for the 2019/20 season. Although there is plenty of interest from all around Europe in his services, Icardi is tipped to stay in Italy given that it is a league which suits his clinical and intelligent style of play. His destination is unclear, there has been interest from Juventus and Napoli, with the latter being a more likely destination for the striker. Wherever he goes, if he remains in Italy, Icardi will always be in contention to be the top scorer in Serie A.

He has scored over 100 goals in Italy so far, including 17 last campaign and 29 the season before that. In all likelihood, had he not been embroiled in controversy last season and had his personal circumstances not affected his form in the early stages, he probably would have gone on to be the division's top scorer. Icardi was stripped of the captaincy last year but with a new manager, Antonio Conte, at the helm he will be looking to rediscover his form right from the beginning of 2019/20. Icardi's ability has never been in doubt and if he focuses on his football this term he will no doubt be one of the main contenders for the golden boot.
