Who will win the 2020 Women’s singles tennis French Open?

The French Open is well known for being played on clay courts which suit players who are used to these types of pitches. In the men’s game, Rafael Nadal has made the clay pitch his own after constantly winning tournaments that involve clay pitches. In the 2020 Women’s singles French Open, the favourites heading into the competition will be Britains Johanna Konta, Australia’s Ashleigh Barty, Czech Republic’s Markéta Vondroušová and Romania’s Simona Halep.

Johanna Konta has been Britain’s number 1 for a few years now since switching Nationalities from Australian to British in 2012. In late 2016 she reached the WTA top 10 and was the first Brit to do so in 30 years since Jo Durie. Although she’s never reached a Grand Slam tournament final, she’ll be hoping to go one step further in next year’s French Open as she does very well on clay. In 2019 she made the semi finals of the French open losing in straight sets to Markéta Vondroušová.

From an ex Australian to a current one, 2019 French Open winner Ashleigh Barty after beating Amanda Anisimova in the semi final and then Markéta Vondroušová in the final. Ashleigh Barty will be favourite to win the 2020 French Open title as she prepares to defend her 2019 Grand Slam. This has been the only Grand Slam final she’s ever made and will hope to keep going. She’s also had a lot of success in doubles tournaments after winning the US Open in 2018 with her partner CoCo Vandeweghe.

Czech Republic’s Markéta Vondroušová made the final of the French Open in 2019 losing to Ashleigh Barty in straight sets. Markéta Vondroušová is only 19 years old however and definitely has a huge future ahead of her as she looks to win titles on clay in the near future. The 2019 French Open final was the only final she’s ever made, but the future looks very bright for the 19 year old.

2018 French Open winner Simona Halep will also be a favourite to win the 2020 edition after losing to Amanda Anisimova in the quarter finals of the 2019 tournament. The 27 year old Romanian has made 4 finals in her career winning only the 1 as she’s lost the 2014 and 2017 French Open finals but she’ll definitely be one to look out for next year as she’s definitely suited to the clay courts.
