2019 French Open Women

The 2019 French Open will be the second Grand Slam of the season. It will take place at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France, from the 26th May to the 9th June.

This will be the 123rd edition of the tournament, making it one of the longest running major events in professional tennis today. It is famed for the red clay courts which provide a stunning backdrop to the matches in the French capital.

While the men’s tournament has been dominated by one player over the past 14 years, the same cannot be said of the women’s. The women’s French Open singles title has been more exciting to watch in many ways and the fact several players will fancy their chances of winning the event this year adds to the thrill.

The defending champion is Simona Halep, who won the first Grand Slam title of her career last year by defeating Sloane Stephens in the final at Roland Garros. However, since that victory, the Romanian has struggled at Grand Slam events, failing to get beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon, US Open and Australian Open.

Her most recent performances came in the Fed Cup and she won both her matches on clay.  Halep will hope for a good run in the Madrid Open prior to the French Open but will need to improve on recent Grand Slam showings to succeed.

Halep remains the bookies favourite to retain her title but you must go back to Justine Henin in 2007 to find the last time a player won the women’s singles back-to-back. Serena Williams will be hoping to move level with Henin on four French Open titles by winning the tournament this year.

However, her performances in Miami and Indian Wells throughout March did little to inspire confidence in the American legend ahead of this event. She reached the quarter-final of the Australian Open and despite being second in the betting, could struggle to better that showing in Paris. Expect to see Williams go further at Wimbledon later in the year.

The world number one heading into the 2019 French Open is Naomi Osaka. The Japanese has won the last two Grand Slam events and recently reached the semi-final on clay in Stuttgart. Osaka has yet to go beyond the third round at Roland Garros but that is expected to change this season. No one predicted with confidence that Osaka would win either the US or Australian Open so you cannot write her off at Roland Garros.

Other potential contenders to win the 2019 French Open women’s singles include the runner-up last year, Sloane Stephens and 2012 semi-finalist Petra Kvitova, the latter of which has one clay court title to her name this season having won in Stuttgart. The Czech has reached the final of three WTA tournaments this season, winning two plus was the runner-up at the Australia Open.

The 29-year-old looks set to challenge strongly this year and could win her first French Open title.
