Who is Granada CF manager Diego Martínez?

Diego Martínez was born on 16 December 1980 in Vigo. Martínez is the current Granada CF manager after being appointed in June 2018. He previously played football for the youth academies of Celta Vigo and Cádiz between the years of 1990 and 2001.

Martínez came through the youth academy of Celta Vigo in 1990 where he stayed at the club for 9 years before moving to Cádiz in 2000. He spent 1 season at Cádiz before deciding to retire in 2001 at just 20 years old. In 2004, Martínez joined Arenas Armilla as their youth team coach which was incredible considering Martínez was only 23 years old before being promoted to assistant manager of the club in 2005. In 2006, he was made first team manager where he stayed in the role for one season before moving on to Motril in 2007. Martínez worked as the manager of Motril for two seasons before joining Sevilla as their third team’s manager in 2010. The following year, Martínez worked as the club’s youth team manager before being appointed as assistant manager of the club in 2012 replacing Javi Navarro.

Martínez then worked as the reserve team manager from 2014 to 2017 as he managed to survive relegation in the final year before securing his first big management job in 2017. After letting his contract run out at Sevilla, in June 2017 Martínez was appointed as the new manager of Segunda División side Osasuna. However, in June 2018, he narrowly missed out on the playoffs along with a poor showing in the Copa del Rey and therefore decided to leave the club.

In June 2018, Diego Martínez was appointed as the new manager of Spanish second division side Granada CF. In his opening season at the club, Martínez guided the club to a second placed finish in the 2018-19 Segunda División which guaranteed their promotion to the 2019-20 La Liga. Next season, Diego Martínez alongside captain Víctor Díaz will have a big job on his hands as he prepares for the upcoming La Liga campaign. The club has spent £6m this summer but will want to make a few more acquisitions before the window closes. If the club doesn’t bring in more players, they may be stuck in a relegation battle next season in the hugely competitive La Liga.
