The President’s Cup 2024

The The President’s Cup 2024 will be held in September 2024, before the U.S. presidential election 2024.

The President’s Cup 2022

The President Cup takes place biennially. It is the same as the Ryder Cup, but here in the President’s Cup, the American team competes against the world team instead of Europe; Europe plays against the USA in the Ryder cup. Match Play is the format of this tournament. Eight out of twelve players compete with the other side. There are four non-playing members. Same like the Ryder Cup, there is no prize money for the participants both the matches are charity events and all the money generated by the match is donated to the charity organizations nominated by the players. Every edition is held alternately in the USA and member countries of the world team. Since 1993, there have been thirteen completions, where the American side won 11 times, lost once and one match was tied between the teams. The world team could only do the feat in 1998 when the captain of the American side, Jack Nicklaus lost against Australian Peter Thomson.

Due to COVID-19, The President’s Cup 2021 has been postponed. In 2022, the 14th edition is going to be held in Quail Hollow Club, Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, from 19th to 25th September 2022. The captain of the American side is yet to be decided while captain of the international team will be south African professional Trevor Immelman.

In the last edition of The President’s Cup, former number one and South African professional golfer. Ernie led the international side, and Tiger Woods was the captain of the American side.

The international team consisted of:

  K. J. Choi

  Geoff Ogilvy

  Trevor Immelman

  Mike Weir

  Marc Leishman

  Hideki Matsuyama

  Louis Oosthuizen

  Adam Scott

  Abraham Ancer

  Li Haotong

  Pan Cheng-Tsung

  Cameron Smith

While Tiger Woods team consisted of:

  Fred Couples

  Zach Johnson

  Steve Stricker

  Brooks Koepka

  Justin Thomas

  Dustin Johnson

  Patrick Cantlay

  Xander Schauffele

  Webb Simpson

  Matt Kuchar

  Bryson DeChambeau

Fred Couples, Zach Johnson, and Steve Stricker were the non-playing player of the American side, and they assisted the captain while K. J. Choi, Geoff Ogilvy, and Trevor Immelman were assisting Ernie Else for international team in the same capacity. The international team came with four rookies while the American team had three.

American won the 2019’s edition which was played in Melbourne, Australia. Final scores were 16 – 14.

Like always, the America team is favourite and top dog, as they will surely have world-class professionals like, world number three Justin Thomas, world number four Dustin Thomson, world number five Webb Simpson, and world number six Brooks, Koepka, and other top players like Phil Mickelson and Patrick Reed.

Most of the players in the American team have won one or more Major tournaments in the past. Koepka alone has won 4 majors in 2 years. On papers, it looks like a comfortable victory for the American team, and there is no upset is expected in the upcoming event of The President’s Cup.
