Vuelta a Burgos 2020

The Vuelta a Burgos 2020 is a popular men’s road bicycle race in Burgos, Spain, which takes place from July 28 to August 1, 2020. This year is going to be the 42nd edition of the race, which was first held in 1942. It is classified as a ProSeries event and consists of five stages, part of the 2020 UCI Europe Tour. The race involves a total distance of 797 km (495 mi), which was a major fact of public interest in the race.

The Route

The mountainous race of northern Spain has suddenly become a great preparation race for the Tour de France.

The 1st stage involves a long distance of 157 kilometers (98 mi) and a medium mountain stage with slopes at 6.1%, starting near the Cathedral of Burgos to finally finish at the gates of the Castle in Burgos.

The riders proceed to finish a potential sprint at Villadiego in the 2nd stage that includes a flat stage of 168 km (104 mi), the longest race in the five stages. The 3rd stage goes to the steep Picón Blanco with the whole mountain stage. The final climb brings 7.8km at 9.3% and ramps around 15% on the table.

In the fourth stage, the route is about 164 km and goes through flat to rolling roads from Gumiel de Izán to Roa de Duero ends with a thud.

The 5th stage starts from Covarrubias and ends through the traditional finish climb to Las Lagunas de Neila. The mountain glacial lakes are located at an altitude of 1,873 meters and to reach there the riders have to climb 11.8 kilometers at 5.6%

The Participating Teams in the Race

Competing teams add a mix of UCI World Tour and Professional Continental teams. UCI WorldTeams have consisted of Bora–Hansgrohe, Astana, Bahrain–McLaren, Mitchelton–Scott, Movistar Team, Groupama–FDJ, Trek–Segafredo, UAE Team Emirates, CCC Team, Cofidis, Deceuninck–Quick-Step, NTT Pro Cycling, Team Ineos, Team Jumbo–Visma, Israel Start-Up Nation.

Recent Winners

Before Ivan Sosa (Team INEOS), the winner of edition 2018 and 2019, recent winners include Mikel Landa (Team Movistar) 2017, Alberto Contador (Tinkoff) 2016, Nairo Quintana (Movistar Team) 2014 and 2013 , Daniel Moreno (Team Katusha) 2012, Joaquim Rodríguez (Team Katusha) 2011, Samuel Sánchez (Euskaltel–Euskadi) 2010 and current World Champion Alejandro Valverde (Team Movistar).

Although the Vuelta a Burgos is the first big international bicycle race in the revised cycling calendar released by the UCI, it is still uncertain whether the event will proceed as scheduled from July 28 to August 1 because of restrictions in place to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Last year’s edition 2019 Vuelta a Burgos was won by Ivan Sosa (Ineos), and a deeper range is expected if the race more subsequently goes ahead this year.
