Belgian National Road Race Championships 2019

The Belgian National Road Race Championships 2019 is a one-day cycling race that determines who the Belgian national champion will be for the year ahead. The winner of the Belgian National Road Race earns the honour of being able to wear the symbolic black, yellow and red cycling jersey, which is allowed to be worn at other road races to highlight their title of national champion.

The 2019 race preview

Belgian cycling has a strong selection of riders, meaning the competition will be fierce. The current champion is Yves Lampaert (Team Deceuninck - Quick Step), who beat Philippe Gilbert (Team Deceuninck - Quick Step) and Jasper Stuyven (Team Trek - Segafredo) to take the national jersey win. Lampaert, who recently won back-to-back years of the Dwars door Vlaanderen, excelled on the cobbled stones during the route in Binche, Wallonia.

Lampaert described the race, "The people, the atmosphere, the parcours – all these made for a beautiful race. It felt like a Classic today. The final was easy, and difficult at the same time. Having two riders in a group of three, we knew it all depended on us, and knowing Stuyven was dangerous, I attacked with 3,500 metres left, and just rode full gas.

Numerous Belgian riders will fancy their chances on the day, as well as the two big Belgian teams Lotto - Soudal and Deceuninck–Quick-Step, who will be wanting victory. In recent years, winners include Oliver Naesen (Team AG2R La Mondiale) in 2017, Gilbert in 2016 and 2011, and Preben Van Hecke (Team Sport Vlaanderen - Baloise) in 2015.

Naesen will be expected to challenge once more, along with last years’ top three Lampaert, Gilbert and Stuyven. One day specialist Greg Van Avermaet (CCC Team), who recently came second in the Tour of Britain will also be a hot favourite, as well as last year’s fifth-placed Sep Vanmarcke (Team EF Education First). Tim Wellens (Team Lotto Soudal), Dylan Teuns (Team Bahrain Merida), Tiesj Benoot (Team Lotto Soudal), Wout Van Aert (Team Jumbo-Visma) and Timothy Dupont (Wanty - Gobert Cycling Team) will also be looking for a podium finish. Last year’s fourth-placed Pieter Serry (Team Deceuninck - Quick Step) will also hope to go one better and get on the podium this time.

A mix of WorldTour, Pro Continental and Continental teams will take to the start line.
