Tour de Yorkshire 2018

This year’s Tour de Yorkshire will begin on Thursday 3rd May and end on Sunday 6th May. The Tour de Yorkshire is a four day British stage cycling race, forming part of the Europe Tour circuit. As with previous years, the last stage of the race will feature a tough amount of climbing to settle the general classification winner. In total, the riders will tackle around 7800 metres of climbing over the course of the 700 km route, before finishing in Leeds.

The current winner is Serge Pauwels (Dimension Data), who won the three-day race last year, taking victory on the final stage to Sheffield. He finished ahead of fellow teammate Omar Fraile and Jonathan Hivert (Direct Energie).

A harder 2018 race

This year, the race has increased from three stages to four. The new look route should promote greater competition amongst the peloton, with more general classification opportunities, rather than sprint stages.

The second stage of the race will include the Tour de Yorkshire’s first ever summit finish, with the cyclists having to climb the Cote de Cow and Calf after 150 km of riding. Stage three presents plenty of opportunities for riders to be aggressive and attack the peloton. And the final stage four is packed full of tough climbs (6 categorised), which means it should be an entertaining finale in the battle for victory.

Stage 1: Beverley - Doncaster (182 km)
Stage 2: Barnsley - Ilkley (149 km)
Stage 3: Richmond - Scarborough (184 km)
Stage 4: Halifax - Leeds (189.5 km)

The peloton

There will be 20 teams competing, including a mix of WorldTour, Pro Continental and Continental teams. Additionally, the British national team will also be fielding a squad for the race. The number of riders per team has been reduced this year from eight to seven so more squads could be invited.

Six local British teams (Canyon Eisberg, Holdsworth Pro Racing, JLT Condor, Madison Genesis Team, One Pro Cycling and Vitus Pro Cycling) will be joining the peloton, including first-timers Holdsworth Pro Racing, with Team Wiggins missing out on a spot for the second consecutive year.
