2021 Academy Awards Odds for Best Picture

Which film will win the Oscar for Best Picture this year?

Sunday, April 25th 2021 marks the 93rd Academy Awards ceremony. However, like many other events taking place this year, things will look a bit different this time around. For example, the ceremony has been pushed back two months from its usual February date. According to Variety, the hope was that a postponed ceremony might allow more time for movie theatres to be open and therefore result in a larger pool of films to choose from for award consideration. It also helps to provide organizers the chance to figure out how to safely pull off a live event at the 3,400 seat Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles during the midst of the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. However, no matter the date or adjusted format that 2021 will bring, the Academy Awards will go on and a new Best Picture will be announced.

The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, is an award show hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, out of Beverly Hills, CA. First presented in 1929, the awards were actually originally broadcast over radio, switching to TV back in 1953. They have even been broadcast internationally since 1969. Currently, there are 24 awards categories, in addition to various honorific awards, with the most prolific category probably being that of Best Picture. For most categories, a film becomes eligible by being publicly exhibited for paid admission for at least one week at a commercial theatre in Los Angeles, CA between January 1st and December 31st of a calendar year. Only members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences may vote on films for awards consideration. The system works such that individuals are nominated by fellow artists in that field— i.e., directors nominate for Best Director, writers nominate for Best Writer, etc. However, the entire academy nominates films for Best Picture.
