Who is Colchester United manager John McGreal?

John McGreal is the current manager of Colchester United and has been in the full time job since 2016. McGreal was born in Birkenhead, England on 2 June 1972 and is 47 years of age. Before becoming a manager, McGreal was a professional footballer playing in defence for sides such as Tranmere Rovers, Ipswich Town and Burnley.

John McGreal started his career in 1990 at Tranmere Rovers, he made 195 competitive appearances for the club scoring a single goal. In the Summer of 1999, Huddersfield and Ipswich Town both made offers of £650,000 for McGreal as the Englishman chose the latter and signed the same season.

At Ipswich Town, John McGreal made 123 competitive appearances scoring 4 goals as he enjoyed a 5 year spell at the club where he gained promotion to the Premier League in his debut season. In his second season at the club, Ipswich managed to finish 5th and therefore qualified for the 2001-02 UEFA Cup. However, the following season, Ipswich were relegated but kept their UEFA Cup qualification thanks to their high ranking in Europe. In 2004, McGreal signed for Burnley and made 96 appearances for the club before retiring in 2007. John McGreal was said to be "one of the best defenders in the First Division" by his former Burnley manager Steve Cotterill. McGreal will have learnt from his many managers that he’s work alongside in the past, this experience will be vital if he is to improve his current Colchester United side.

In 2015, John McGreal was appointed caretaker manager of Colchester United alongside Richard Hall after previous manager Tony Humes was sacked. McGreal was appointed full time manager in May 2016 after Kevin Keen left the club after their relegation to the EFL League Two. Whilst at the club, McGreal won the EFL League Two Manager of the month award for December 2017.

Since being the full time manager at Colchester United, McGreal has led the side to an 8th placed finish, 13th placed finish and another 8th placed finish from the years of 2016-2019. They’ve had disappointing cup runs over these years and will be desperate to improve on this weak statistic. The fans will be hoping John McGreal can be the manager to take the club to the next level as they look forward towards this season with the hopes of playoff football come the end of the season.
