Slovenia in Eurovision Song Contest Odds

The 28-year-old Lea Sirk singer won the Evrovizija Melodija 2018 at the end of February, the Slovenian national competition, with the song “Hvala, ne!” and will be in May on the stage of the Altice Arena in Lisbon.

After three unsuccessful attempts in 2009, 2010 and 2017, Lea Sirk managed to get his ticket for Eurovision with Slovenia. A patience rewarded for the one who released a solo album in 2014 and who was a chorister of his compatriot Tinkara Kovac the same year at the European song contest.

Lea Sirk won the jury however was only third in the televote with her energetic entry “Hvala, Ne!”. Boyband BQL won the national televote for the second year in a row, but once again saw their Eurovision hopes crushed by the jury. Big names like ManuElla and Tanja Ribic were already eliminated in the semi final, as eight acts remained for the final, including the runner-up of EMA 2017, boy band duo BQL.

The victory of Lea Sirk with the song "Hvala, ne" (No, thanks), has surprised everyone: the singer managed to get the maximum score of 5 of the six juries present in the final (OGAE, composers, radio and television), with the exception of the international members who awarded the 12 points to Ina Shai who has a theme song with r&b touches, "Glow" (brightness) that finished sixth in the final ranking. Among the international jurors we had Kristian Kostov, Bojana Stamenov, Aminata, Emmelie de Forest and Dami Im. The big favorites, the BQL duo had to settle, for the second year in a row, with the second place performing the piece "Promise" (promise), this time being the one that enjoyed the favor of the television audience , obtaining 72 points but it was the least appreciated by the committee of experts.

The Slovenian song is a mixture of familiar themes: it’s a rhythm resembles of the most famous "Bang Bang" played by Nicky Minaj and Ariana Grande, with touches of trap in the style of J.Balvin; even the choreography is a copy of Beyoncé's "Single Ladies".

Lea Sirk was born in Koper, a coastal city near the Italian border, 28 years ago; her debut dates back to 2006, when the singer was only sixteen years old and participated in the third edition of the Slovenian talents bitka talentv (talent battle) contest, arriving as second classified.

In 2011, he participated in the national pre-selection of the former Yugoslav Republic as a member of the Leaparfume group, which was eliminated in the first round. In 2014 she took part in the edition of the festival held in Copenhagen, as a singer of Tinkara Kovač who represented the country that year.

Slovenia made their Eurovision debut as an independent country in 1993. They have finished  in seventh place twice, most recently in 2001 with Nusa Derenda’s song Energy. Slovenia have failed to make it to the final for the past two years. Slovenia will compete in second semi-final of the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest on May 10 in Lisbon.
