Who will be relegated from the La Liga in the 2019-20 season?

After Girona, Huesca and Rayo Vallecano were relegated from the 2018-19 La Liga, we look ahead to the 2019-20 season at the candidates who could be relegated by the end of the season. Osasuna, Granada and Mallorca were all promoted from the 2018-19 Segunda División whilst teams like Celta Vigo and Valladolid will hope to beat the drop next season. Osasuna won the 2018-19 Segunda División as they blew away the competition finishing first on 87 points which gave them automatic promotion to the 2019-20 La Liga under manager Jagoba Arrasate. Jagoba Arrasate will be the manager going into the next campaign and he will hope captain Oier Sanjurjo will be able to motivate the rest of the players in the hope of survival.

Granada finished second last season behind Osasuna on 79 points, this gave them automatic promotion to next year’s La Liga. They’ll need to improve and recruit well over the summer if they are to stay in the La Liga for the foreseeable future. Manager Diego Martínez and captain Fran Rico will want to survive the drop next season but right now it seems unlikely.

On paper, Mallorca are the weakest team going into next season, they finished 5th in the Segunda División last season on 69 points. In the promotion playoffs, they beat Albacete 2-1 on aggregate and then Deportivo La Coruña 3-2 on aggregate to seal their promotion. However, unless they inject serious funds into the team, it looks unlikely that they’ll be relegated under inexperienced manager Vicente Moreno next season.

Celta Vigo finished last season in 17th place on 41 points which was only 4 points above the relegation zone. There will be pressure coming from beneath and if they don’t drastically improve then they could be facing the drop. It looks like they’ve lost their star striker Maxi Gomez to West Ham but are looking to sign Barcelona midfielder Denis Suarez and Southampton attacker Sofiane Boufal to strengthen their side for the upcoming campaign. Valladolid also finished on 41 points last season but finished in 16th place as they look forward to another season in La Liga. Manager Sergio González will look to Javi Moyano to lead the side on the pitch next season if they are to survive relegation. They’ve already signed Eibar winger Pablo Hervías for £900k and will hope to improve the team even more as the transfer window continues.
