Who is CD Leganés manager Mauricio Pellegrino?

Mauricio Pellegrino is the current CD Leganés manager after taking over in June 2018. Pellegrino was born in Leones, Argentina on 5 October 1971. Pellegrino previously played football for clubs around Europe such as Barcelona, Liverpool, Valencia and Deportivo Alavés.

Pellegrino came through the youth academies of CA Sarmiento and Vélez Sarsfield between the years of 1982 and 1990. He then broke into the first team at Vélez Sarsfield in 1990 where he made 186 competitive appearances for the Argentinian side scoring 11 goals in his 9 year stint at the club. In his final year at the club, Pellegrino was sent out on loan to FC Barcelona under manager Louis van Gaal. In his time at FC Barcelona, Pellegrino made 23 appearances before moving on to Valencia. Pellegrino spent 6 years at Valencia where he made 140 competitive appearances and scored 5 goals throughout his time at the club. In 2005, Pellegrino joined Liverpool where he made only 12 appearances before moving on to Deportivo Alavés in the same season. He made 13 appearances for Deportivo Alavés before retiring in 2006 to go into management.

In his time at Valencia, Pellegrino finished as runners up in the UEFA Champions League in both the 1999-00 and 2000-01 seasons. He won 2 La Liga titles in 2001-02 and 2003-04 along with a UEFA Cup in the 2003-04 season. He also won numerous awards in Argentina along with a La Liga title at FC Barcelona.

After retiring in 2006, Pellegrino took managerial jobs at Valencia, Estudiantes, Independiente, Alavés and Southampton between the years of 2012 and 2018. He failed to win a major honour at these clubs, however, he finished as a runner up in the Copa del Rey in the 2016-17 season whilst at Alavés.

Pellegrino was appointed by CD Leganés in June 2018 and signed a one year contract. In his first season at the club, Pellegrino guided the club to a 13th place finish along with a round of 16 appearance in the Copa del Rey losing 3-1 on aggregate to a strong Real Madrid side. So far in this transfer window, Pellegrino has spent £5m on a handful of players and will be happy with his side going into the upcoming season. Next season, the club will be hoping for another mid table finish along with a good cup run.
