Who is Levante manager Paco López?

Paco López is the current Levante manager after taking over from Juan Ramón Muñiz in March 2018. López was born on 19 September 1967 in Silla. López previously played football for clubs around Spain such as Levante, Valencia’s reserve team, Castellón and Benidorm between the years of 1985 and 2002.

López was in the Valencia youth academy originally before making his first appearance for the reserve team in 1985. He spent 4 seasons at Valencia before joining Carcaixent in 1989 and then Torrent in the same year. At Torrent, he made 34 competitive appearances scoring 8 goals in his 2 year stint before signing for Hércules in 1991. López made 90 competitive appearances for Hércules over a 3 year period scoring 23 goals. Extremadura acquired the services of Paco López in 1994 where Lopez failed to impress making only 7 appearances scoring 1 lone goal. However, Lopez’s first big move came in 1995 where Levante signed the Spanish forward, López went on to make 16 appearances for the club scoring an impressive 11 goals. However, he left to join Castellón in the same year. Lopez made 89 competitive appearances for Castellón scoring 28 goals across a 3 year period as he joined Real Murcia in 1998. He made 29 appearances for Real Murcia and scored 7 goals before joining Benidorm in 1999 where he retired in 2002.

After retiring, López went on to manage Villarreal’s third team, Catarroja, Benidorm, Alcoyano, Cartagena, Valencia’s second team, Villarreal’s third team, Villarreal’s second team and Levante’s reserve team between the years of 2004 and 2018. He then got his first big managerial job in the same year at Levante.

In March 2018, after working his way through the ranks at Levante, Paco López replaced Juan Ramón Muñiz as Levante announced the former as their new permanent manager. 2 months later, López signed a new 1 year contract after impressing the board with good results including a 5-4 win over FC Barcelona and a 1-0 win over Getafe CF. The club have spent £11m in this transfer window which will definitely strengthen the team for the upcoming season. This season, López will be hoping he can guide the club to a mid table finish after being stuck in a relegation battle last season. López has a lot of experience managing different Spanish sides, but his lack of first-team managerial jobs may worry some of the Levante fans going into the upcoming season.
