Who is Villarreal's manager?

Unai Emery is the current Villarreal manager. Emery was born on 3 November 1971 in Hondarribia, Spain. Emery played football for clubs around Spain such as Real Sociedad, Toledo and Leganés.

Emery started his playing career at Real Sociedad’s youth academy in 1986 and broke into the first team in 1995. He made 5 competitive appearances for the club before joining Toledo. He made appearances for Racing Ferrol, Leganés and Lorca Deportiva CF before retiring in 2004 where he went into management at the same club.

He got his first big managerial job in 2008 where he was appointed manager of Valencia where he impressed qualifying for the Europa League and Champions League consecutively during his stay at the club. Emery then joined Spartak Moscow in May 2012 where he had a disappointing time at the club as he was sacked in November of the same year.

In January 2013, Emery was appointed as manager of Sevilla where he worked at the club for 3 years. In his time at the club, Emery won the Europa League 3 times in a row before leaving to join Paris Saint Germain in June 2016. In his opening season at the French club, he finished second in the league behind AS Monaco and also bottled a 4-0 aggregate lead to FC Barcelona in an uninspiring season. The club decided to stick with the Spanish manager for one more season before his contract ran out as he joined Arsenal in May 2018.

In his opening season at Arsenal, Emery led the side to a 5th place finish and a Europa League final where he subsequently lost 4-1 to Chelsea. On 29 November 2019, following a series of poor results and a winless run of seven games, Emery was sacked by Arsenal.

On 23 July 2020, Emery was announced as the new head coach of La Liga side Villarreal, succeeding Javier Calleja on a three-year deal.
