Tour Colombia 2020

The third edition of Tour Colombia 2.1 will take place in Boyacá, Cundinamarca, and Bogotá, as a commemoration of the 200 years of national independence. The race will start on February 11th in Tunja and will end on the 16th of that same month in the capital, Bogotá. The Tour Colombia is part of the UCI America Tour 2020 within category 2.1.

The idea of the Colombian Cycling Federation is to take this race throughout Colombia, therefore, in its first edition, in 2018 it competed in “el eje cafetero”, where the victory was for Egan Bernal, in 2019 it was in Antioquia, where Superman Lopez won, and this year the race moves to an area where Colombia has seen great cyclists grow, such as Egan Bernal or Nairo Quintana. The first stage of the course will take place in the hometown of Nairo, Tunja. A 16.7 km time trial stage where the Tour Colombia will begin and will ride 823 km until the final stage in Bogotá.

The first contact with the mountain will be in the fourth stage that will start again from Paipa, which will be the great epicenter of the expected national cycling festival. The day will finish at the municipality of Santa Rosa de Viterbo, where the riders will climb to the Alto de Malterias, located four kilometers away.

The last two stages will be completed in the region of Cundinamarca, the first of which will start from Paipa and will arrive in Zipaquirá. While the sixth and the best stage will start from the same hometown of the great Egan Bernal and will arrive at El Verjón, second category mountain prize in which the riders will ascend to 3,266 meters.

Preview of the course

In the last season edition, with a high number of Colombians in the bunch, we had a change of the leader of the classification in all stages. Rigoberto Uran, Alvaro Hodeg, Bob Jungels and Julian Alaphilippe managed to wear the leader jersey. But in the last stage, the decisive one, with the most demanding final slope, in Alto de Palmas, the Colombian Nairo Quintana took the stage victory, but his compatriot Superman Lopez finished only 8 seconds later and was proclaimed champion of the final classification.

Ivan Ramiro Sosa and Daniel Felipe Martinez accompanied him on the podium. The 2018 champion, Egan Bernal, would end up in the fourth position.

Favorites in Tour Colombia 2020

But in the 2020 edition, with a new tour and in a different region, it will continue to captivate us. The end of El Once - Alto Verjon seems decisive, at more than 3200m altitude.

The absentee of this edition will be Nairo Quintana, who has confirmed his participation in the Tour de Provence with his new Arkea team.

Some of the favorites that have confirmed their participation in this edition are Superman Lopez (Astana), Sergio Higuita (EF Education First), Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck - Quick Step), Daniel Martinez (EF Education First), Bob Jungels (Deceuninck - Quick Step), Jan Polanc (UAE - Team Emirates).

Although without a doubt, there will be many young Colombians willing to win stage victories, and who knows, whether to achieve the final victory.

We are sure that it will be a competitive fight for the final victory.
