CIS Minor Championship - Katowice 2019

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s that time of the year again; starting with the CIS Minor from January 16-20, the minors to qualify for the Katowice Major begins next month.

A few familiar faces will be in attendance, including the major attendees AVANGAR and the former major winners Gambit.

Despite being considered one of the weaker regions in CS outside of Na’vi, there are definitely some teams in CIS that could make waves in the Major if they’re able to qualify.

The top two teams from the Minor Championship will qualify for the New Challengers stage of the Katowice Major.

AVANGAR’s to Win?

Despite producing top-notch talent, the CIS Region has really struggled to put together an elite team (other than Natus Vincere).

A very common trait, among the region's teams is inconsistency, which could definitely lead to some wild results coming out of the Minor.

The most favorite to win the tournament is AVANGAR, as they have consistently displayed that they can compete with the game's best when they’re firing on all cylinders.

But which AVANGAR will we get to see in this tournament? That’s the big question here:

If they come out flat-footed (like they did in the last CIS Minor), then as usual we'll see another squad claiming the #1 spot. But if they run like a well-oiled machine, then they will definitely come out of the Minor as the top seed.

Can Gambit Return to Top?

It is not very common to see a major winner back in the qualifying stages so soon after winning it.

Gambit took home the chip at PGL Krakow 2017 (only two majors ago), but after losing their IGL Zeus (as he left back for Na’vi), they haven’t been quite able to find their footing since.

With the recent roster changes losing both Adren and Hobbit, there is quite the question mark surrounding the squad heading into the CIS Minor.

But with a proven track record of taking teams from relative obscurity to the Major stage, i think the Gambit's new coach B1ad3 efforts will definitely be showcased in this tournament.

With this in mind, I think that the veteran leadership in Mou and Dosia combined with the guidance of B1ad3 will lead Gambit to take the #1 seed in the CIS Minor with the win.

Can Team Spirit make it through the Minor Once Again?

Last major saw the Spirit qualify for New Challengers stage by making it through the CIS Minor with the 2nd seed, only to fall to TyLoo (2-0) in Round 5.

Boosting a more talented field than last year, this year team Spirit had some wins over some pretty good teams in North, ENCE, and OpTic, so, they are definitely capable of making a run to finals.
