Ligue 1 Top Scorers 2019/20

The nature of Ligue 1 is that it is perpetually dominated by one team: Paris St Germain. The Qatar-backed club have won six of the last seven league titles since the 2012/13 season and, with one more triumph, will equal AS Saint-Étienne’s record of 10 French domestic league victories. With no other club able to get close to them, you’d certainly put your euros on Thomas Tuchel’s superstars to surpass their rivals in the coming campaign.

With the outcome of the ‘title race’ practically settled before a ball is kicked, fans around the world are left to speculate over other variables in the league. Who will be relegated to the second division? Who will claim the remaining Champions League spots? And who will be crowned the division’s top goalscorer?

With regards to the lattermost of these questions, the race is, if not wide-open, then at least not a foregone conclusion. Let’s take a look at some of the most likely candidates for this year’s prestigious golden boot:

1) Neymar

At one point it looked like the bombastic Brazillian might not be playing in France come the start of the 20-19/20 season. But now, after the transfer interest from his old club, Barcelona, seems to have fizzled out, the mercurial forward looks set to stay in Paris. His time with the club has been mixed; he has scored 51 times in 58 appearances but has been frustrated, both by injuries and by PSG's incompetence on the European stage. But, even when he's playing at half-speed, Neymar is one of the best in the world and it would be foolish to discount him as a contender for this year's golden boot.

2) Edinson Cavani

Another PSG player on a list dominated by the side, Edinson Cavani has a truly remarkable record in the French top flight. In the league, he has scored 134 times in 186 appearances and is edging closer to two centuries of goals in total for the club - just seven more will do it. He, like Neymar, struggled with injuries at times last season; he featured in only just over half of Tuchel's starting 11s. Despite this, he still managed to net 18 goals, giving him a goals to games ratio of nearly one in one. The Uruguayan is now 32 years old and some of his critics have speculated that his abilities may begin to decline this season. But, as a player who relies, less on his physical attributes (pace, strength etc) and more on his ability to read the game, he will always be in the running for the top goalscorer award, whatever his age.

3) Radamel Falcao

Just as PSG dominate the list at club-level, South America commands the list in terms of continental representation. Colombian legendary goalscorer Falcao has played for Monaco since 2013 after a string of unsuccessful loan moves in England with Chelsea and Manchester United. The tiny principality in the South of France is clearly the forwards spiritual home; he has scored 83 times with the club in just shy of 150 appearances. Even in the midst of the club's catastrophic failures last season (they finished 17th, just three points above the relegation zone after sacking Leonardo Jardim, hiring Thiery Henry and subsequently rehiring Jardim), Falcao still bagged 15 goals. You'd guess that under Jardim's permanent control once more, Monaco's fortunes will improve - as their form upturns, so will Falcao's goal return. It seems unlikely that Monaco will launch a title challenge, but in Falcao they have a striker who can at least keep them in relative contention.

4) Kylian Mbappe

The only French native on the list is also the frontrunner for the reward. Since winning the World Cup in 2018 and dominating Ligue 1 the following season, Kylian Mbappe has emerged as the superstar youngster in World football. Last year he astonishingly scored more goals than he played games, netting 33 times in 29 appearances in the league. For a player who plays, not as an out-and-out striker, but in a wider role, these are truly miraculous figures. For a player who only recently left his teenage years, it is almost frightening to think of how good this young man will become. Barring injury, Mbappe will reach 100 career goals this season, if he does so he will have reached this figure quicker than the greats of Messi and Ronaldo. At some point, the youngster will surely have to move on to a new league where he can challenge himself to a greater extent. But for now, he seems content to lead the line for PSG in Ligue 1 as their talisman, a role he has seemingly snatched from Neymar. Presumably, Mbappe will score bags full of goals again in 2019/20.
