Steven Schumacher – Manager Plymouth Argyle

Steven Schumacher is an English football manager and former professional footballer who now manages Plymouth Argyle in League One. In the course of a 16-year career that began at Everton and included stays at six other English Football League teams, he has featured in over 400 games.

Professional Career

Schumacher started his career with Everton. However, he was unable to make the first team and as a result, went on a couple of brief loan stints. Schumacher signed a three-month loan with Carlisle United. He then signed a one-month contract with Oldham Athletic. He failed to make an impact with both the teams and ultimately decided to leave Everton.

In July 2004, Schumacher joined Bradford City after leaving Everton. His best season to date was the 2004–05 campaign, when he started more than 40 games for the first team and scored a lot of goals while playing in the middle of the park. He made 35 appearances and scored twice in all competitions the following season as a result of his suspension and injury. After his contract with Bradford expired, Schumacher left the team in May 2007.

After leaving Bradford City, Schumacher signed for Crewe Alexandra a week later. Schumacher made 29 appearances in the 2007–2008 season, scoring just once across all competitions. With his playing time coming from the bench of substitutes, Schumacher's first team opportunities at the beginning of the 2008–09 season quickly became limited. In total, Schumacher made 19 appearances and scored three goals in all competitions. He would depart Crewe Alexandra when his contract expired in May 2010. In his three years with the club, he had played 81 times.

On July 8, 2010, Schumacher signed a two-year contract with Bury. Schumacher ended his first season at the club, making 46 appearances, and scoring nine goals across all competitions, despite being injured for much of the 2010–11 campaign. He scored 10 goals in forty-four appearances during the 2012–13 season, leading the team in scoring. Bury struggled and dropped to League Two as he was injured late during the season. Despite this, Schumacher received three honours for the 2012–13 campaign: Bury Times Player of the Season, the Forever Bury Player of the Season, and the Frank Hoult Memorial Player's Player of the Season.

In May 2013, Schumacher agreed to join Fleetwood Town. Due to being on the substitute bench, Schumacher's time with the first team was limited to 32 games and five goals across all competitions. He would make 33 appearances across all competitions to conclude the 2014–15 season.

Schumacher joined Stevenage on a free transfer in June 2015. He tore his anterior cruciate ligament during a game, which sidelined him for nine months and prevented him from playing for the majority of the 2015–16 season. Schumacher went on to make thirty appearances in the 2016–17 season, scoring six goals across all competitions. The club announced his release on June, 2017.

After being let go by Stevenage, Schumacher accepted a coaching position at Everton. Schumacher rejoined Bury as first team coach on January 19, 2018, working with interim manager Ryan Lowe. Schumacher continued in his position after Lowe was appointed as the new manager on a permanent basis. As a result, he declared his retirement from professional football. Despite Bury's financial difficulties at the time, Schumacher's contributions helped the team finish the 2018–19 campaign with promotion back to League One.

When Lowe left Bury to manage Plymouth Argyle in June 2019, he took Schumacher with him, appointing Schumacher as his assistant manager. Along with Lowe, Schumacher's contributions enabled Plymouth Argyle to finish in third place and make a quick return to League One.

After Lowe left to pursue a position at Preston North End in December 2021, Schumacher was named manager of Plymouth Argyle right away. Due to Argyle's strong start under Schumacher, the team won six games in a row without giving up a goal in March 2022, the best defensive run for the team since 2005. Due to his outstanding performance, Schumacher was named the EFL League One Manager of the Month for March. A 5-0 home loss on the final day of the campaign caused Plymouth to fall out of the play-off positions, and the season ultimately came to an unsatisfactory conclusion.

Plymouth led the league at the end of September after a strong start to the 2022-23 season. Schumacher was named Manager of the Month for September after winning three of the four games.
