Arsenal vs. Chelsea: FA Cup Final 2020 Preview

The FA Cup Final is only a few days away and we are all busy speculating what the outcome will be of this momentous match. And if you fancy a flutter on it then it’s a good idea to brush up on some of the most popular predictions.

The match will be played at Wembley on the 1st of August, with kick-off at 5.30pm BST. And due to the government Covid guidelines, there will be no fans present in the stadium.

Recent history of finals involving Chelsea and Arsenal may show us that Chelsea are the favourites to take the Cup home. But thanks to the magic of the FA Cup, we never know who will win until the end whistle blows.

Let’s first take a look at the previous form for both clubs:

  • Arsenal last won the FA Cup in 2017 against Chelsea.
  • Chelsea last won the silver in 2018 and are 8-time winners.
  • Head to head, Arsenal have won against Chelsea 76 times. Whilst Chelsea has 65 occasions with a shared 59 draws.
  • Arsenal missed out on the European competitions by finishing 8th in this seasons league, so they need to win the FA Cup to qualify for the Europa League next season.
  • Chelsea finished in the top 4 in this seasons league table so are already through to the Champions League.
  • Each team goes into Saturday’s game off the back of Premier League wins against Watford and Wolves. Chelsea are favourites though.

One thing that we can be certain of is that a London team will win the FA Cup, no pun attended of course. And we’re also expecting a lot of goals. But just who will be scoring those goals?

Giroud goes back to his garden

The France international player moved to Arsenal in 2012 and famously stated that Wembley was his garden, after being a key player in Chelsea’s FA Cup win in 2018. The player has collected 7 Wembley medals, he’s won the Community Shield 3 times and the FA Cup 4 times.

The 33-year-old is Lampard’s favourite option and in 10 appearances on the pitch, has netted goals seven times, scoring in every one of his last 4 matches. Which is why you’ll find the odds are high for him to score anytime during this Saturday's final.

Both teams to score

Out of the last 6 matches played by both teams, each have hit the back of the net 5 times. So, we’re expecting both teams to score, having given fans loads of excitement in their recent outings.

Players to look out for

Each team has some world-class players, and it’s expected that the likes of Arsenals; Pepe, Aubameyang, Lacazette, and Torreira will all be key players this Saturday. Chelsea has Pulisic, Kante, Jorginho, and Mount to look out for them.

The managers

Arteta replaced Emery in 2019 as manager for The Gunners and has since then taken the club up a level, pushing players, and making sure they are at the top of their abilities. Arteta was quoted recently saying that his club winning the FA Cup and ending 8th in the Premier League does not make a good season though.

Chelsea’s manager Frank Lampard joined a relatively unproven and young team with no newly signed players at that point. Despite this, he has turned around the fortunes of his squad who are now strong contenders to take a trophy.

Each of the Managers grabbed the FA Cup when playing for their respective teams in their own younger playing careers. And are hungry to win again and prove themselves in their first seasons as managers.

Past FA Cup meetings

Both clubs have ended up together in 2 previous FA Cup finals, with The Gunners reigning victory each time. Their most recent match at the UEFA Europa League final meet, saw Chelsea take home the win with a score of 4-1. And since then the teams have played against each other twice in the Premier League which ended in a draw of 2-2 and a Chelsea victory of 2-1.

Whatever the outcome may be on Saturday, we are sure to witness a super exciting game.
