Who is Augsburg's manager?

Heiko Herrlich is a German football manager, Herrlich was born on the 3rd of December 1971 in Mannheim, West Germany. As a player, Herrlich played as an attacker for German clubs such as Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Borussia Dortmund. Heiko Herrlich is the current newly-appointed manager of FC Augsburg and has been in the job since March 2020.

Heiko Herrlich started his career out at FC Kollnau in 1978 before joining 2 more youth academies: FC Emmendingen and SC Freiburg between the years of 1984 and 1989. However in 1989, Herrlich joined Bayer Leverkusen where he made 75 competitive appearances and scored 6 goals.

After 4 years at Bayer Leverkusen, Herrlich joined Borussia Mönchengladbach where he stayed at the club for 2 seasons. In his 2 seasons at the club, Herrlich made 55 appearances and scored 28 goals which earned him a big move to Borussia Dortmund in 1995. At Dortmund, Herrlich made 128 appearances and scored 41 goals for the club.

In 2000, Herrlich found out he had a brain tumour which he successfully recovered from, however, he never returned to the heights he hit previously which led to his retirement in 2004. On the International stage, Herrlich made 20 appearances for Germany under-21’s and scored 17 goals, but for the National team, Herrlich scored only 1 goal in 5 games with his only goal scored coming against Wales in a Euro qualifying match.

Heiko Herrlich went into management in 2005 where he took charge of the Borussia Dortmund youth team. He then went on to manage Germany U-17, Germany U-19, VfL Bochum, SpVgg Unterhaching, Jahn Regensburg and Bayer Leverkusen between the years of 2007 and 2018. Although he hasn’t won any honours at club level, Herrlich finished third in the FIFA under 17’s World Cup along with winning the “Best under 17’s coach” award in 2008.

Herrlich is an extremely experienced manager and clearly understands the game of football. Augsburg fans will be hoping he can transfer this knowledge onto the team this season in order to get the most out of his players.
