What Happened Last Season?

Leeds United won the second tier title in the 2019-20 Championship season and are already getting a taste of the tough English Premier League.

They made a remarkable return to the top flight after an absence of sixteen years. Joining them was West Bromwich Albion and Fulham who beat off Brentford in the playoffs. On the way down is Norwich City relegated after only a season in the top flight together with Bournemouth, Watford (both teams relegated after five years in the top flight).

Top EFL Contenders 2020/21

While the league is always full of turns and twists, bookmakers still continue predicting the likely champions based on current performances and teams’ personnel. Here’s a quick preview of the top EFL Championship contenders.

After missing out on automatic promotion in the 2019/2020 season, Brentford is top of the bookmakers’ list to win the Championship. The Bees fell just short of the target last season but if they’re to keep their impressive run, then this is their season.

They have an impressive defence which is the best in the Championship (0.87 xGA per game). Even with the loss of some stars, they still get a24% chance of securing automatic promotion while playing at a new stadium. Despite losing to Birmingham in the first match, Brentford remains at 7/1 to win automatic promotion.

Norwich City

It was heartbreaking for many football fans to see Norwich City go down after such an impressive start to the EPL.  Teemu Pukki had lit up the EPL with explosive goal-scoring form but this wasn’t enough to maintain the momentum and keep the canaries up.

However, they’re now 4/1 favourites in Bwin’s Championship winner predictions. They have already started with a win to halt a 12 12-match losing streak in all competitions.

After relegation, Watford has shown the desire to get back on the first attempt with their first match win against Middlesbrough at Vicarage Road. It was a tumultuous 2019/2020 campaign overseen by four managers ending in relegation.

Vladimir Ivic’s first match in charge showed the desire for Watford to get back on top. The Hornets are now 5/1 in Bwin’s Championship winner predictions and a 20% chance to be challengers for an automatic promotion spot.

Stoke City/Nottingham Forest

Michael O’Neill’s impact at Stoke City has seen more bookmakers place the team among the favourites to win the EFL championship. They tie with Nottingham Forest a  fifth-favourite despite the differences in goals and positions last season.

Bournemouth has another manager in charge and this could motivate them to fight for promotion. After Eddie Howe’s exit, long-term assistant James Tindall is now in charge. There are also half a dozen players with more than 1,200 Cherries appearances between them

A late 3-2 victory at home to Blackburn could point to a team willing to fight for the new manager. Other teams in the running for promotion are:

  • Cardiff City - 16/1
  • Middlesbrough - 16/1
  • Millwall - 16/1
  • Preston North End - 20/1
  • Swansea City - 20/1
  • Derby County - 20/1

Who Might Face Relegation?

On the lower side of the EFL Championship title are Middlesbrough and Huddersfield who struggled in the relegation zone for much of the 2019/2020 season. They’re joined by Sheffield Wednesday who were docked 12 points, Luton and newly promoted Wycombe.

Top Scorers

Last season, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ollie Watkins were in a class of their own each with 26 goals. For this season, Norwich’s Teemu Pukki is favourite to win the golden boot. Other contenders include Ivan Toney, Neal Maupay, Nottingham Forest’s Lewis Grabban and Nahki Wells.

There’s so much to look forward to in the EFL Championship 2020/2021. You just have to sit back and enjoy the action.
